Since we were little one question you commonly heard was, “so what do you want to be when you grow up?” Typically, answers varied from veterinarian to teacher. Then came a time when we had to put on our “big kid” pants and actually choose what we wanted to do with our lives. The number of majors that are provided by universities today is phenomenal and college students are able to find what they are decently good at. Some students will choose the pre-med route, while others will choose business. And with every major, there will be hardships and successes.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone belittles my major simply because it is not a science major. No, I do not need to go to medical school, nursing school, PT school, or anything; however, I do need to get into a good graduate school and pass numerous certifications and exams to even get close to pursuing my dreams.
News flash, I also take hard classes! Shocker, right? As an 18-credit, full-time student, I have classes that I struggle with the same way a Chemistry student struggles with their core classes. Us non-science majors have just as many assignments and exams as a science major. Here’s another shocker, I also have to work for my grades too! I do not sleep through every class and learn basic concepts such as 2+2=4, I spend hours studying and learning hard material that takes a while to grasp. For example, as a double major in Communicative Disorders and Psychology, I am currently learning the phonetic alphabet. Yes, a completely different alphabet made of every sound we make and it is extremely time-consuming and frustrating.
Just as a Biology student is good at science classes, I am good at my non-science classes. I have science major friends who take a look at the stuff that I do and could never do it, same as I could never do what they do. We all have our weaknesses, but we also have our strengths and passions. If we were all able to excel in the same major then how would the world function? If everyone were equally good at the same things then how would any of us have a future?
So you’re a science major? Great, good for you. But do not put down my hard work and dedication all because in your eyes if my major isn’t science based then it must be easy. Do not put me down when I stress about graduate school because it isn’t as elite as medical school in your mind. Try my major for a bit and I guarantee you’ll struggle just as much as I’d struggle in your major.
