5 Top Alternatives To Naturally Treat Anxiety

As someone who struggles with overwhelming anxiety on the daily, I have not only researched, but tried multiple natural supplements to help aid in relaxing. Anti-depressants and other pharmaceuticals have in no way been proven to work, and often cause suicidal thoughts or attempts. Ditch the doctor, and turn to Mother Nature; the Earth is rich with anxiety fighting minerals and plants! Below is a list of the best supplements I have found to cope with my anxiety, as well as making my body better responsive to stress. *All supplements listed are vegan, holistic, and organic*

*Please note: Do not buy any commercialized brands for anything, whether it be supplements or groceries. The quality has been altered and diluted.*

1. Rhodiola

Rhodiola capsules are made with Rhodiola Rosea Root, an adaptogen, meaning it helps your body better respond to change and stress. Every time I have taken this supplement, I am put in a very relaxed state. I often find it difficult to even get irritated, excited, or anxious, when on this supplement. I am completely calm.

One of the great botanicals available today, Rhodiola rosea originates from both Siberia and the Tian Shan mountain range of northwestern China. A well studied adaptogen, Rhodiola defends the body overall, and protects general health and well-being. Its anti-stress and fatigue-fighting properties make it one of the most popular botanicals in all of Siberia. And its promotion of energy, endurance and stamina makes Rhodiola rosea a valuable aid for athletes. A small green plant with a golden blossom, Rhodiola’s beneficial properties lie in the root. Extracts from the roots of the plant have been used by Eastern Bloc athletes for decades to improve overall performance.

2. Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is referred to as the "royal herb", "winter cherry", or "Indian ginseng". The calming, yet metabolic balancing nature of this root, helps for a well-rounded experience. The adaptogenic herb also helps to revive any chemical imbalances within your brain!

One of the most incredible aspects about adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha is that other than curing depression and anxiety, it can actually also help people with both hypo and hyper thyroid issues. It has been shown to support a sluggish thyroid for people diagnosed with Hashimotos, and has been shown to improve the health of those with an overactive thyroid or Graves disease.
Several studies have revealed that natural antioxidants, such as vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene, may help in scavenging free radicals generated during the initiation and progression of this [Alzheimer’s] disease. But we found Ashwagandha afforded lipid peroxidation inhibitory effects more potent than commercial antioxidants

3. 5-HTP

I swear by 5-HTP for anyone struggling with anxiety or obesity. It is absolutely one of the most amazing and helpful supplements, I have ever taken. 5-HTP not only helped me become stress-free, but also aided significantly in my weight loss journey. "Preliminary studies indicate that 5-HTP may work as well as certain antidepressant drugs to treat people with mild-to-moderate depression."

5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is a chemical that the body makes from tryptophan (an essential amino acid that you get from food). After tryptophan is converted into 5-HTP, the chemical is changed into another chemical called serotonin (a neurotransmitter that relays signals between brain cells). 5-HTP dietary supplements help raise serotonin levels in the brain. Since serotonin helps regulate mood and behavior, 5-HTP may have a positive effect on sleep, mood, anxiety, appetite, and pain sensation.

4. Holy Basil

This tropical Asian plant has anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties that aid in reducing depression and anxiety. For the past 3,000 years, this plant has been used to treat anxiety, depression, cancer, and even diabetes.

Multiple scientific studies examining this property of Ocimum sanctum have found that supplementation with various extracts of holy basil decrease stress hormone levels, corticosterone in particular.11-16 Lower levels of corticosterone are associated with improved mental clarity and memory, and long-term, can reduce the risk of age-related mental disorders.

5. Cannabis

Although this plant has been made illegal for some ungodly reason by our dictatorship, it still has incredible medical benefits, especially for those struggling with PTSD, anxiety, and depression. Obviously Indica would probably be best for those who need to calm down any type of mania, however Sativa can also be used in creating a healthy metabolism, ultimately a well-balanced energy.

Please be cautious, as sometimes Sativa can actually worsen anxiety in those with overt insecurities or fears. If you are someone who is very uncomfortable and rather fearful constantly, CBD would be a better choice for you, as THC does activate the amygdala.

According to a study published by the Institute of Psychiatry, CBD proved to offer great psychiatric potential, including uses as an antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like compound. During the study, animals who had been given CBD experienced lower levels of anxiety and depression in a series of tests, such as swimming and puzzle mazes, than animals who had not been given CBD.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
