Most three pointers in a season, most consecutive games with a three pointer, most seasons in leading the league in three pointers. According to basketball reference, these are just some records that are held by Stephen Curry and last Monday, he added another record to his resume.
After going 0-10 from three which ended his streak of consecutive games with a three, Curry came back and lit up the New Orleans Pelicans with 46 points and record breaking 13 three pointers in the game. The previous record was 12 which was set by Kobe Bryant, and tied by a couple times with one of them being Curry. It’s because of these three point records that Curry has become one of the great players in the league with a scoring title and back to back league MVP’s. When you look back at the great three point shooters in NBA history like Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Steve Kerr, etc. none of them are like Curry.
One reason why Curry is the best three point shooter ever is because of his ability to shoot off the dribble. Curry is one of the great ball handlers in the league, so he can create his own shot besides waiting for the ball to come to him. Other three point shooters usually get open and wait for the pass to shoot.
Another reason why Curry is the best three point shooter is because how often he is used to go with the amount he has made. Curry average three point attempts over the past two seasons were 11 and 10 according to basketball reference and with those attempts, he made five. Ray Allen’s highest amount of three pointers attempted in his 19 year career was eight, which he did twice and the most he averaged was three makes. The most Reggie Miller has averaged in attempts was six and with that, the most he averaged was close to three. Curry is the point guard, so he has the ball most of the time and since he is so lethal from the three point line with the ability to create his own shot, he’ll shoot it often, and make it often.
The last reason why he is the best shooter is because of the pace he’s on to break the record for all time three pointers made. Some people argue that Miller, and Allen are better three point shooters then Curry because they are top two in three pointers made in their careers. Miller is second with 2,560 three pointers and Allen is first with 2,973, as of right now, Curry is 18th with 1636 makes. Curry is only 28 and if he stays healthy and continues to stay at this level with his ability to shoot the three, he can break the record before his career is said and done.
