While plenty of people begin to fill their spring break suitcases with bathing suits, passports, and potential Instagram captions, I will be venturing back home for a week filled with no particular plans. One might think that staying at home could not be anything but boring, seeing as though you're not exploring anywhere new. I on the other hand, couldn't be more excited to stay home during my spring break, and here's why.
1. Spending time with your pet.
Sure, I love getting to talk to my parents on the phone, but does my dog know that I miss her? My parents tell her, but does she really know? Whether it's a dog, cat, hamster, or even fish, there is nothing more exciting than seeing your pet react to you coming home after a long day at school or a long semester at college.
What's better than waking up in the morning and lying on the couch only to hear the "pat pat pat" of dog paws behind you before a large body of fur jumps up to be by your side. Why be on a beach when you can experience the unconditional love of a pet?
2. Home cooked meals.
Sure, exotic meals from across the globe are delicious, but nothing beats the comfort food created by your loved ones at home. It starts with your mom telling you she's making your favorite home-made meal, in my case, macaroni and cheese. Then, you wander around the kitchen as she works, hoping to sneak a bite or even offering to help.
Suddenly, you begin to eat, and you can practically taste the love that was put into the meal just for you. Nothing is better than sharing a warm, home cooked meal with the people you love the most. After weeks of surviving off of dining hall meal plans, you almost forget what real food is supposed to taste like. It's overwhelming.
3. Sleeping in your own bed.
In college, having a bunk that is raised five feet in the air gets old really quickly, and nothing feels greater than sprawling out in the big bed you have at home. No need for lumpy hotel mattresses and sharing a room with someone. It's all about you. Your first night back, you're so excited to remember the feeling of a double or queen sized bed. After a long day of traveling back home, you're like...
As soon as you get comfy, you remember why you loved your bed so much. Pretty soon, it becomes the best part of a break at home. It's comforting, warm, and you can stay in it all day without your roommates judging you.
4. Catching up with family and friends.
Personally, I love spending time catching up with my mom and dad. They're cool and funny, and quite frankly, it's a nice change of pace to not be living with 50 other girls on one floor.
Sure, lying by the pool all week with tan skin and a good book is relaxing, but it will never be as fun as catching up with the people you've missed the most.
5. A schedule filled to the brim with no plans.
Nothing is more exciting than making plans to do nothing. When you travel, there is an itinerary you have to abide by. When you're home on break you can forget the schedules. While exploration can be fun, it can be exhausting as well. Vacation is a time to reconnect with your lazy self, so forget obligations, crawl back into your bed (see #3) and relax.
Not to mention, the possibility of having a quality internet connection on vacation might be slim. Forget about slow college wifi, and bask in the glory that is high speed internet and Netflix marathons.
