As a college student, there is always a lot going through your mind. Having fun, hanging out with your friends, and going out to parties is always a must, but your work always remains as a top priority. Doing well in school is determined by a few factors, such as paying attention in class, putting in the time to study, and making sure that you get your rest.
Getting enough sleep is crucial in college. As a student, you always find yourself doing something. As a college student myself, I'm constantly on the go, whether it be a two-hour tennis practice, a meeting for the finance and econ club, or just spending the entire day in the library studying for an exam the next day. No matter what it is, college can be stressful, and the last thing anybody wants is to get sick.
As the weather starts to change you notice more and more people sneezing, coughing, and blowing their noises. Flu season can be hard to get through and especially hard not to get sick during it. Living in such a condensed area with roughly 10 to 15 other people can be tricky when not trying to getting sick. Usually when one person is sick, it’s not long until the rest are sick, but you want to do everything that you can to avoid it.
When trying to stay healthy, staying clean is a top priority. It is a given that you wash your hands constantly. The amount of bacteria that sits on objects like doors, handrails, and even your own cell phone is terrifying. Hand soap, showering daily, and even doing your laundry weekly are exceptional ways of fighting off the germs.
An obvious one is not sharing drinks with others. The spreading of germs during flu season makes the flu the next black plague at college. Once a few people have it, the whole school seems to have it. Don’t be the starter, and don’t be the spreader of the disease. Sharing drinks is usually how it all begins. I know it is tempting when you’re at a party to share someone else's drink or take a puff of someone’s vape, but don't! Germs fly during this time of the year and if you do this, you’re pretty much guaranteeing yourself to get sick.
Eating healthy is a big one. Now I know that this is hard for must college students, especially if you’re anything like one of my suitemates. The kid will literally eat as much buffalo chicken as his stomach can fill. However, eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is important in keeping your immune system strong. Making your own food in your dorm is defiantly a smart idea as well. Cooking and preparing food can be a really fun time, especially if you do it with a couple of pals. Nothing beats a room 101 pasta dish from my suitemate Tim and yours truly.
Another tip to not getting sick would be wearing warm clothing throughout the day. If it's below 30 degrees outside and you have to get to class, your entire body should be smothered in layers of clothing. This may sound rather silly, but there are still kids who think a t-shirt and shorts are still acceptable when there is snow on the ground. A long sleeve shirt, sweatshirt, and jeans are proper wear for the fun-filled season of fall and when winter hits, snow boots, a hat, gloves, and a heavy jacket are a necessity.
Getting sick in college is the last thing anybody wants. Trying to do well in your classes when you are too ill to even pick up a textbook isn’t good. That’s why getting a good nights rest, drinking plenty of water, and staying clean are really crucial to staying healthy.
