As former UCF Knights quarterback Blake Bortles enters his second year for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars, it's time to take a look at the Central Florida stars that tried to go pro this year and see how they fared. Each NFL roster can keep a maximum of only 53 players, so not everyone managed to make the cut.
Clayton Geathers
Former UCF Knight Clayton Geathers practices with the Indianapolis Colts.
Clayton Geathers, who recorded 97 tackles, a sack, and an interception for the Knights in 2014, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He left for the NFL ranked third all-time in UCF tacklers with 383. Geathers made 17 stops in his preseason with the Colts and also recovered a surprise onside kick. The Georgetown, S.C. native is part of Indianapolis' active roster for the 2015 season and looks to see first-team action on 3rd down and in obvious passing situations.
Rannell Hall
UCF alum Rannell Hall practicing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Hall, who was a senior at UCF in 2014, as an undrafted free agent in May. He served as an all-purpose skill player with the Knights, compiling 500 yards receiving, 129 yards rushing, and 330 kick return yards in his senior year. In 2013, UCF's Fiesta Bowl-winning campaign, Hall led the team in receiving with 886 yards and five touchdowns. Although he was originally waived by the Bucs to give them room on their main roster for five new free agents, he was added back on September 8 as a member of the practice squad. As the name suggests, practice squad players practice with the team but are ineligible to play in games unless they are promoted due to injuries on the active roster.
Torrian Wilson
Torrian Wilson (74) shakes hands with New York Jet Keon Lyn (42) after an NFL preseason game.
Wilson started all 13 games for UCF at left tackle in 2014, earning all-conference recognition, as well as recognition by his teammates as the Knights' most outstanding offensive lineman that year. He was signed in May as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Lions. Unfortunately, there wasn't room for him as the fifth offensive tackle on the Lions' roster, and he was cut from the team on September 5.
Justin Tukes
Tukes' official Eagles headshot.
At 6-5, 250 lbs., Tukes was a reliable blocking tight end for the Knights in 2013 and 2014. He also totaled 286 receiving yards and three touchdowns over the course of his UCF career. Although he got a good long look from the Philadelphia Eagles, he was released on August 30.
Terrance Plummer
Plummer (40) during Redskins training camp.
Terrance Plummer commanded the field during his time at UCF, tallying 99 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception during his senior campaign in 2014. He became one of three Knights to play in the Senior Bowl this year. Plummer was brought on by the Washington Redskins on May 7 and made 12 tackles during the preseason, impressing the coaching staff with his consistency. Despite being cut on September 5, he was re-signed onto the practice squad the next day.
Breshad Perriman
Former UCF star Breshad Perriman catches a pass in practice from Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco.
Perriman had a dominant junior year at UCF, catching 50 passes for 1,044 yards and nine touchdowns in 2014. Knights fans may remember him as the man who caught a 51-yard Hail Mary pass as time expired to beat East Carolina 32-30 in the regular season finale. Perriman quickly moved up in the eyes of NFL scouts when he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.24 seconds, and he was drafted in the first round (26th overall) by the Baltimore Ravens. Although he injured his knee early on in training camp, he might recover quickly enough to see play within the first few weeks of the season.
Jordan Ozerities
Ozerities (38) in action at UCF.
As a senior in 2014, Ozerities broke up 11 passes and intercepted three. During his career at UCF, he recorded 164 tackles and two and a half sacks. He was brought on by the Atlanta Falcons in May but didn't make the team.
Josh Reese
Reese (89) during training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Another wide receiver picked up in free agency by Tampa Bay, Reese caught 39 passes for 552 yards and six touchdowns for UCF in 2014. Although Reese showed a knack for making clutch catches in his time with the Knights, he failed to make the Buccaneers and was cut after only six days on their roster. He was later picked up by Philadelphia, but the Eagles dismissed him on August 30.
Jacoby Glenn
Glenn (39) in preseason action with the Chicago Bears.
A redshirt sophomore in 2014, Glenn racked up 48 tackles and made a stunning seven interceptions to earn a spot on the Associated Press All-American team. The year before, he made 52 tackles with two forced fumbles and two picks. He was signed in May by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent. Much like Rannell Hall, he was let go earlier this month but was brought back on September 7 as part of the practice squad.
In all, out of the nine players that spent time on NFL rosters this year, two made official 53-man rosters and another three were brought onto practice squads. Congratulations to Breshad Perriman, Clayton Gathers, Rannell Hall, Terrance Plummer and Jacoby Glenn, and best of luck to Josh Reese, Brandon Ozerities, Justin Tukes, and Torrian Wilson in their future––football or elsewhere.
Have fun watching your former UCF stars on the biggest stage in American sports this season! Go Knights!
