At the University of Cincinnati, I was waiting for my Microbiology lab to start when this board caught my attention. The board read, "I pledge" and it has paper and markers for anyone who walks past to create their own. It warmed my heart and made me realize the power EVERYONE has. Sure it is just one piece of paper on a random board in a chemistry building, but all of these together encouraged me. I've chosen a few samples and I hope they encourage you as well ❤
I pledge to treat every living thing with respect.
I pledge to make everyone feel important.
I pledge to be kind to ALL people.
I pledge to love others how I would want to be loved.
I pledge to make my voice heard for those whose voices have been silenced.
I pledge to accept everyone for who they are and not discriminate against anyone!
I pledge to do the RIGHT thing no matter what anyone especially the president says #onelove
I pledge to use my privilege to uplift the voices of others and not speak over their experiences #stayinmylane
I pledge to appreciate others and my surroundings every day.
I pledge to be respectful always, you never know what someone is going through.
I pledge to spread love and hope for people around me.
I pledge to stand up for those who can't.
I hope these encourage you to make your own and live by them! Here's mine:
I pledge to be a teacher and a learner, always. I pledge to make my OWN opinions based on personal experiences, EDUCATION, and compassion. I pledge to always see the good in others, as well as in myself. I pledge to give second chances, to be an advocate, to be welcoming and humble. I pledge to be the best version of myself and continue to work towards my dreams. I pledge to travel the world and utilize every opportunity life gives me.
A note from the university: "Recently, the Department of Biological Sciences has experienced an increase in hate speech and harassment. The Biology Graduate Student Association (BGSA) takes a strong stance against against this type of behavior. We support individuals of all race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, disability, medical condition, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. We will not tolerate hate, intimidation, or harassment in our labs, department or classrooms. Our community is inclusive, and we both value and foster diversity. As graduate students, we pledge to respect and value everyone. We urge our fellow undergraduate and graduate students to do the same. Any behavior in the contrary is in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and state law. We expect our department and it's students to be respectful and inclusive at all times. This expectation extends beyond the classroom and into our daily lives. If you experience or encounter hate speech or harassment on campus, know that you can and should come to a member of BGSA for help or support. Diversity and inclusion makes us stronger."
