11 Things to Expect When Taking the Ink Plunge

Stages of Getting a Tattoo

Tattoos are by far some of the hardest decisions that need a lot of thought. As I’m sure you’ll hear, yes, they are permanent. But, if you pick the right ones, they are absolutely worth it. Here are 11 things to expect when taking the ink plunge:

1. Picking Out Your Tattoo

This may be the hardest part of the tattoo process. Don’t settle on a design that you’re not totally head over heels in love with. Remember, this is a permanent thing on your body.

2. Telling People You’re Getting a Tattoo

Be prepared for either an explosion of happiness of an explosion of judgment. I promise you, you will hear the phrase “You know that’s permanent, right?” at least five times, if not more. But, it’s your decision and if you think it’s the right one for you, then go for it!

3. Finding a Tattoo Artist

This is the second hardest part of getting a tattoo. Just like your design, don’t settle on where you go to get your tattoo. If some place is significantly cheaper than another, there might be a reason. Check out some websites and ALWAYS look on Yelp at the reviews and previous customers’ pictures of the end result. Pay the extra for not only the quality of the work that will be on your body forever, but also the atmosphere, cleanliness of the shop, and qualification of the artists as well. This is an area where skimping is out of the question. (For those in the Albany/Troy, NY area, I got my tattoos done at Ms. Dixie's Tattoo Parlor and have never been happier with my artist, Jessica Gahring, her shop, AND she was featured on TLC's "NY Ink." Needless to say, if you need an artist, I'd recommend her in a heartbeat.)

4. Scheduling Your Appointment

Depending on the size and detailing of the tattoo you want, you may need to wait a while before getting an appointment in. Some tattoos take all of five minutes while others, if done right, may take hours. If you’re looking for a complex tattoo, don’t expect an appointment right away; the artist will need to plan ahead. But, if your design is little and simple, they may be able to get you in the next day.

5. Getting the Right Amount of Money

When you make your appointment, make sure to ask the artist for an estimate on the cost of your tattoo and then ALWAYS BRING MORE! You don’t want to be stuck at a parlor with half a tattoo because you don’t have enough money on you. And don’t forget some extra cash for a tip.

6. The Day Of (Before)

One thing my artist told me to do was to take Advil at least two hours BEFORE your appointment. This will help with any pain that you may have. Another tip is to drink tons of water and stay hydrated!

7. The Day Of (During)

Make sure you make it crystal clear with your artist what you want your tattoo to look like. Never be scared to ask questions; this is a permanent thing and you want it looking the way you’ve always imagined. Then, take some deep breaths, and you’re ready!

8. The Day Of (After)

You’ll feel a little sore, but you’ll love what you got!!!

9. Taking Care of Your Tattoo

You artist will give you strict advice on how to care for your tattoo. Follow it to a T. You’ll need special soap, special lotion, and there are a list of no-no’s that you can’t put on your tat for at least three weeks. Make sure to maintain the upkeep – your tattoo will thank you.

10. A Week After – Yes, It's Supposed to Peel

That’s just the body’s way of healing after a couple layers were disrupted. This happens with every tattoo, so don’t worry.

11. Enjoy Your Tattoo!

You made it through the steps and now you’re in love with what you got. The next question in your mind: When can I do it all over again??

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
