Alpha Female

noun| alpha female | \ˈal-fə ˈfē-ˌmāl\

A powerful, assertive woman. Her confidence may be due to her good looks and/or superior intelligence. Men desire her, and girls with low self-esteem hate her.

According to Urban Dictionary, an Alpha Female is a dominant female in a group, to put it simply. In our current increasingly ultra- Feminist, yet at times ultra- Misogynistic society, this is a phrase that generates a lot of buzz within popular culture worldwide. Whether you call yourself a Feminist, a “Men”inist, or anything else, the concept of an Alpha Female is one that comes up as a topic of conversation across all spectrums of gender- related opinion. As previously established, the term is one that creates desire and also poses a threat amongst the sexes.

Other words that can be linked to the idea of an Alpha Female are:

Bitch

****

Feminazi

Poser

Wannabe

Many people who know an Alpha Female- regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, or political views- find a powerful and assertive woman to be a scary thing. Being demanding or being able to command attention are characteristics traditionally resigned to the male gender. When a lady shows expertise in something, or when she shows that she might be better at something than the boys, she is intimidating to everyone. Other girls want to know why they aren’t like that, and guys want to know where it comes from. Well, what is “it”?

“It” is a lot of things: intelligence, understanding how sex appeal works and being unafraid to both exude it and use it to one’s advantage while simultaneously having self-respect and respect for others, cunning, determination, compassion and passion. The female person is a complex one wherein all emotions and thoughts, in conjunction with one another, make for a real- life superwoman. A woman can be smart and sexy. She shouldn’t have to give up her business suit for a body-con dress in order to be taken seriously or respected. The Alpha Female can do anything, in anything, and she damn well knows it.

That’s the scary part. That she knows. Women becoming increasingly self- aware? Terrifying. Even more terrifying than this is that we never know for sure when calling someone an “Alpha Female” is a put-down or a compliment.

If it’s said to you as a put-down or if you say it as a put-down, it’s because of fear that somebody else’s beauty, brains, and power might supersede one’s own. Don’t be afraid! An Alpha woman could be your biggest ally if you don’t choose to needlessly make her your biggest enemy.

Some other synonyms for the Alpha Female are:

Boss

Assertive

Leader

Sexy

The other day, after having merely introduced myself to a stranger, I was told: “You’re the Alpha Female type, aren’t you?” Nobody had ever said that to me before, and it took me a second to think about it. Am I? After a couple moments of a little too firm, little too long handshaking, I looked at them, chuckled and said “Yes, I guess you’re pretty right. I am.”

I’ll go right ahead and make something abundantly clear: I am not a “mean *****” by nature, but it’ll come out when it has to. I’m kind, polite and very conscious of the feelings of others. On the same token, I’m very conscious of my own feelings, and being an Alpha makes me feel good. When you feel good, other people will gravitate towards you, which is what makes the Alpha Female one all- around sexy mama.

It’s good to have friends that appreciate it. It’s good to have a partner that gets and promotes it in a positive way and sees you as an equal, not a challenge. It’s good to be the one that everyone can always count on to get the job done or take the plunge. It’s good to have big goals and hopes and dreams that you’re not afraid to tackle.

If somebody says it to you, own it! If you see a girl that’s taking the world by storm, let her know. The term “Alpha Female” isn’t one that has to pass between lips to slander. Let’s use it to help motivate our friends, family members, and girlfriends to the top of their game. It all starts with knowing that somebody else’s success does not diminish your own, regardless of who or what you are.

To all powerful the Alpha women, don’t let anything or anyone stop you.

Ever.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
