10 Ways The University of Kentucky Does Spring Semester Best

And yes, it's more than just basketball season.

After a much-needed winter break, we’re eagerly and apprehensively approaching second semester. For most of us, we’ve forgotten how to hold a pencil and sure as hell won’t remember to put “2018” when dating our papers. But after countless hours spent in front of the TV on the couch and maybe too much family time (still love you all), we’re definitely ready to go back to school.

First semester may have been filled with sunny Caturdays, football tailgates, and emptying your wallet at Keeneland, but trust me, the fun doesn’t end here. Spring semester at the University of Kentucky doesn’t disappoint.

10 things to look forward to in the spring semester at the University of Kentucky:

1. Basketball season

We may not be a football school, but thank god for basketball season. Basketball isn't just a sport here in Kentucky, it's a way of life.

2. Keeneland Spring Meet

Just when you thought you were done throwing away what little money you have in your slim college wallet on horse bets, Keeneland is back for the spring season! A Friday or Saturday spent at Keeneland should be on every UK student's bucket list.

3. March Madness

We may have previously mentioned basketball season, but March Madness at UK is in a category of its own. Couches may be burned in the process.

4. Spring Break

Yes, winter break ended nearly a week ago and we're already talking about the next break. We'll take all the days off that we can get.

5. Warm weather again

Is it just me or does this winter seem to be particularly more painful than those in the past? I'm ready to bring the Lulu shorts and Chacos back out.

6. Baseball season

You read correctly, baseball season. Not only is UK's baseball team actually pretty good, but the games are super fun. Any excuse to tailgate, right?

7. Spring formals

New Orleans, Daytona Beach, Toronto, Tybee Island- oh the places we will go. The coolers are well worth it ladies.

8. New semester, new schedule

Kiss that 8 am goodbye and RIP statistics! One of the best things about starting a new semester is getting a new schedule.

9. Ending the semester with the Kentucky Derby only an hour away

Although the Kentucky Derby may be in Louisville, it's less than 100 miles away. The Kentucky Derby is Keeneland on steroids and everyone should experience it at least once in their lifetime. What better way to end the semester?

10. Another semester spent at the wonderful University of Kentucky

At the end of the semester, it's another year down here at UK. The weeks go by faster and faster and time just doesn't seem to slow down.

Will we ever be ready for the real world?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
