If there is anything Sports Illustrated is well-known for, it’s the one time of the year when Sports Illustrated doesn’t cover sports and, instead, gorges its pages with beautiful women and nothing else. So, it comes as a real "shock" when one of the company’s own writers can’t give respect to women in the world of sports.
Andy Benoit of Sports Illustrated tweeted the following...
Not only did Benoit garner negative responses from the public, but comedians Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler performed a 4-minute roast, harking back to their SNL days with a segment called REALLY!?! where they called him out on enjoying golf (considered a very boring sport) and choosing NFL Draft Day over a beautiful day outside. They even criticized networks like FOX, for putting women’s sports in obscure and lesser-viewed channels like Fox Sports 1.
Benoit has already apologized for his statement.
I’d like to put my two cents in for a moment, and ask why, in 2015, have we still not reached gender equality in the world of sports? (Or in general?) I have seen women play volleyball, basketball, tennis, golf, softball, and even football.
So, Benoit, I ask you this: What makes women playing the EXACT same sport as a man any different to watch? Because from my personal experiences, the sport is no different from watching a bunch of dudes play it. Women can play just as competitively as men.
As for networks like ESPN and Fox Sports, I agree with Amy Poehler. Why are women’s sports put on less popular channels? Are the networks too afraid to show some backbone and say, “We’re skipping Draft Day to bring you a WNBA game?” What will it take to give our female athletes the respect they deserve?
Actually, the bigger question here is, “Why is the term ‘women’ even in ‘women’s sports’?” Why can’t it just be called “sports?” We have guys of different ethnicities playing the games. So, what makes a woman any different?
