If you are anything like me, then you like to have your future planned out. The unknown is scary and nothing is worse than when you find yourself on a path that isn’t stable or defined. From making plans three days in advance to worrying about whether I will have a steady income after graduation, I like to know what I’m getting myself into. Unfortunately, it is impossible to live this way, for life is incredibly unpredictable. Instead of being upset over this unsettling truth, think about how your world would change if you knew every aspect of your future ahead of time. Motivation would be lost, and days would simply be boring. Take advantage of the uncertainty and make it magical. Spontaneity is a quality that needs to be valued more than it currently is in society.
I have found that my best memories came from experiences that I was originally unsure about. I used to never escape my comfort zone, and as a result, I didn’t have much excitement in my life. Now, if I am “on the fence” about doing something or going out somewhere, I decide to go through with it. In my opinion, it is better to regret actions rather than realize you live a boring life. While it is important to stay smart and out of danger, it is OK to live a little. Push yourself to do something a tad crazy, and you’ll find that your confidence levels will rise. Also, your stories will become much more interesting.
Being spontaneous is healthier for your well-being as well. People with this quality radiate a certain vitality which can only be envied. If you want to go do something, then seriously just go do it. Get the haircut you’ve always wanted. Change up your style. Quit the job you hate. Tell your crush how you feel. Stand up to your condescending friend. No one is holding you back but yourself. Life is short, and like I have said before, anything can happen. You never know when you are seeing someone for the last time. Being honest and open is the best way to learn who you really are, and to stop being afraid of what people think. When you spontaneously decide to do something for yourself, you will truly feel happy. This feeling was brought upon from no one besides you.
I’m not saying that being spontaneous and “obtaining happiness” is easy because trust me, I know it’s not. However, it is a skill that I am trying to work on. When you finally stop worrying about the future or what others think of you, it feels as if a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Live in the moment, and as long as your actions aren’t too reckless, everything should work out in the end. After all, we are still young and have our whole lives ahead of us. Possibilities are endless. Go out and experience all of them.
