Spirit Week Workouts

Have you ever wondered how sorority women do it? Not only are they involved all over campus and donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity every year, but they look great doing it. I decided to do some investigative journalism and figure out exactly how these women got in tip-top shape for the most important event of the year: recruitment. Over the past week I have gone from house to house, and had the pleasure of sitting down with several of these fit women to ask about their diet and fitness routine.

Whoever said abs were made in the kitchen was right, and these sorority women know it. After surveying hundreds of Panhellenic women I found the secret to those rock hard sorority abs. For the week leading up to recruitment, known as spirit week, the women go on an all liquid diet. From the moment you walk into the house it is easy to see. There are thousands of cups scattered across the floor and discarded in the overflowing trash cans. Every girl shows up in her XL t-shirt – a method they use to hide their bodies until the big reveal – and her liquid of choice in hand.

After this big discovery I had to ask the hard-hitting questions, like are all liquids created equal? The answer is no. Some girls opt for a venti iced green tea from a local shop they refer to as “Starbs.” They claim that this not only provides some energy but it rids your body of toxins and boosts metabolism. Some of the more tired girls can be seen toting a “skinny” iced coffee, meaning that it was made with skim milk. This provides essential proteins to help sculpt lean muscle and caffeine to get you through the long days.

In order to get all the essential nutrients in, some girls carry around smoothies or juices. These vary from veggie packed green cups to fruit filled antioxidant ones. Add a scoop of protein powder to a smoothie for an extra boost.

Next up is the workout routine. Ever wondered how sorority girls get their sculpted legs? Well, I’ve got one word for you. Stairs. These girls take stairs like a pro. They run up and down them all day long and take laps around the house to lean out and tone up their legs like a Victoria’s Secret model walking the runway. To tone the tops of the thighs and do some abdominal work the girls do a new form of squats that is new to the fitness industry. They start standing, move into a kneeling position, occasionally rock back onto their heels, then pop right back up, and finish it by standing up with legs together as they are in a dress this whole time.

When asked how they celebrate their new recruitment toned bodies after Bid Day the girls said: pokeys and yomo.

So there you have it. The complete run down of a sorority girl’s fitness and diet routine. Follow this for two weeks and you a guaranteed to have the body of your dreams.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
