For anyone, finding a good deal on a flight is a big deal. Especially for a broke college student like myself, I like to find the cheapest flight possible. Through my experience of attempting to find a cheap flight to purchase so that I can go home and surprise my family over my Fall Break, I found an airline called Spirit Airlines. The airline seemed pretty legit and rarely cheap for plane tickets, so I went ahead and began my purchase and thought I was getting myself a deal compared to other airlines like Delta and American. I thought wrong ... very, very wrong.
1. It's more expensive to carry on your own bag, rather than to pay to check it.
With most airlines, or as a matter of fact almost every airline, it's free to carryon your own bag as long as it fits the standards to fit inside the overhead compartment, and it costs extra to check a bag. But apparently according to Spirit Airlines, they think it's somehow ok to charge for a carryon bag AND make it more expensive than checking a bag. Like why am I paying you for me to carry my own bag?
2. They charge you an extra $10 for a boarding ticket.
This is low, even for you Spirit Airlines. You are seriously going to charge me $10 for a piece of paper that proves that I paid for this "cheap" flight? My advice to the unfortunate people that decide to fly Spirit is to print your boarding ticket before you get to the airport.
3. Most uncomfortable plane seats I have ever sat in.
Let me just tell you, these seats look like those chairs that fold up, and better yet, they don't even recline.
4. NO COMPLIMENTARY SNACKS OR DRINK.
I sat in that plane for about FOUR HOURS each way roundtrip, and I did not get a complimentary snack or drink, not even a cup of water, because they charge for water, too. Not sure if anyone else has a weird obsession with chewing or sucking on ice like me, but even when I asked for a cup of ice, this flight attendant tried to tell me I had to pay for the ice, too.
5. You have to pay an extra $20 to pick your seat on the plane.
If I'm going to have to pay $20 to pick my seat, I might as well pay $50 to sit up front since these thieves are tricking me into paying extra anyways.
6. Their flights don't ever leave on time...
Literally, Spirit, you have one job.
7. The flight attendants are sloppy looking.
Not all flight attendants are perfect, but these flight attendants look like they just rolled out of bed and didn't even brush their hair. If I can get up in the morning and make myself look presentable, so can you.
8. "Less Money, More Go" is Spirit's motto.
Biggest lie any company has ever told me.
9. They constantly talk over the loud speaker trying to sell you things.
I had to wake up at 3am to catch my flight at DFW to go home at 6am, so you know I'm obviously going to be asleep the whole plane ride. But how am I supposed to sleep with these damn flight attendants coming on the intercom every 10 minutes promoting their merchandise? "Don't forget to check out our great line of drinks and snacks!" WE GET IT.
10. Spirit uses you as a guinea pig without telling you.
It's bad enough that I had to sit in a cramped seat for 4 hours. But before we land, they come on the intercom saying, "Thank you ladies and gentlemen for flying Spirit Airlines, we will be landing shortly. However, that was a great first run on this brand new aircraft that has never been flown before." After they said that, all the black ladies around me started hollering like no other, "OH LAWD NO, WE GON' DIE TODAY!" Comforting, isn't it?
11. They don't have Wifi or TVs on the plane.
I figured since Spirit was that thirsty for some money they would at least have you pay for wifi, but no, there isn't even wifi or a nice little movie playing on the TVs that should be above the seats.
12. Lastly, you may think you're getting a good deal for $100 on a flight, but you're actually paying like $500 without knowing it.
I would never wish this airline upon anyone, not even my worst enemy.
Please think twice before you book a flight with Spirit Airlines. Even though it looks like a good deal, it's really not after you tack on all the extra fees and the poor service. That's the first and last time I will ever fly Spirit. I would 11/10 NOT recommend.
