This is the time of year when our stressed-out bodies start to break down.
If you aren't keeping up with a healthy diet, vitamins, and exercise, there's a good chance your immune system is shot -- and honestly, finals week is the worst time to be sick.
Below are some common ailments that afflict us college students during this crazy week time, and some -- you guessed it -- teas that might help.
(They also taste good.)
(And note: I'mtalking about brewed teas, not that bottled stuff.)
1. Stomach problems.
Chamomile tea can soothe the stomach. It's helpful for diarrhea, nausea, acid reflux, and even abdominal cramps (Ladies, you know what I'm talking about).
Alternatives: Ginger, fennel, lemongrass, peppermint, rosemary, cardamom
2. Anxiety/stress.
Chamomile strikes again! Chamomile tea is a better option than coffee if you need caffeine, especially if you need something to calm you down a little.
Alternatives: Ginger, lavender, herbal chai, cardamom (can help detox after drinking coffee), lemongrass, vervain, lemon balm
3. Fatigue.
Green tea promotes energy without giving you the jitters (AKA: too much coffee). Drink green tea if you need an energy boost!
Alternatives: Black tea (stronger than green tea)
4. Memory retention.
Having trouble remembering the words on your flashcards? Black tea can help. Black tea has been known to 'raise alertness, attention span, and even work performance.'
Alternatives: Green tea
5. Insomnia.
Before a big test, sometimes I'm too nervous to even sleep. Teas help. Try a lavender tea if you're having trouble drifting off.
Alternatives: Chamomile, rooibos
6. Chills/feeling cold.
If you've got chills or often feel like it's too cold in a room (and yet everyone else seems fine), then cinnamon tea will warm you up.
Alternatives: Spearmint + lemongrass
7. Under the weather.
Chai spices have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so if you're feeling sick/feverish/gloomy, drinking a chai tea is the first step toward healthiness (after you've gotten a lot of rest, of course).
Alternatives: Chamomile, elderflower, fennel, ginger, peppermint, lavender (can bring down a fever)
8. Bloated/uncomfortable.
During finals, it's not uncommon to show up everyday in sweatpants or pajamas, and just eat whatever you can, whenever you can. Everything else just doesn't take priority.
If you're feeling a little uncomfortable, need a 'pick me up,' or just need to be reminded that you are beautiful and loved, try a peppermint tea.
(Also, you are beautiful and loved. Never forget that.)
Alternatives: Green tea (stabilizes metabolism)
