Why A Big Is More Than Just A Big

Being a Big is not as little of a job as it seems.

A big.

To girls in a sorority, a big sister makes so much of their sorority years. I know for me and many others, getting their big is one of their favorite memories of their freshman year. From jumping out of cars, popping out of boxes, and unwrapping them from their head to toe, bigs find a way to surprise their little. The anticipation after bid day to get a big (and all their presents) is the best, but longest time. But getting a big means getting so much more than a big...

A big is a... Mentor. Getting a little is like a more subtle version of having a child. Your little is a freshman in the sorority. She has no clue what is going on. So, you must mentor her and teach her all of the best ways to being a great sorority lady. I know my big has taught me all I need to know to be the sorority lady I am and one day mentor my little.

A big is a... Best friend. When any little FINALLY gets their big, it's who they constantly want to spend time with. After all the cafe dates, Walmart trips, and craft nights somewhere along the way you gain another best friend. She will be there after the worst fight with your boyfriend to the night you finally get that promise ring. She will always be your best friend through good and bad times.

A big is a... Future Bridesmaid. She has seen the best of you...and the worst of you. She definitely deserves a spot behind you on the big day. I mean if it wasn't for her, who would have replied to his texts when you were being too crazy to reply? So, really both you and your soon to be husband owe her a spot. She will be there the day you get proposed, make your candle for candle light, pick your dress, and the day you get married.

A big is a... Soul Mate. Of course, nobody completely understands until you get your big. She is one in the same as you. You both love the same type of food, buy the same shoes, and have so many things in common. It's like Jesus somehow matched you two for a big and little pair. Who knew that there was an older version of you floating around in this world? Who knew she would be at your college, in your sorority and then become your big. She shares the same love for all the same things you do, but the same type of soul. It's almost creepy.

A big is a... College Mom. Whether your mom is hours away or a 30-minute drive, your mom cannot be there for everything that happens in college. Before a big test, she'll help you study, do your makeup before a big night out, and make you food when you're too broke to buy anything. She can never be your real mom, but she can be there when your mom can't.

So, as the saying goes, "The only thing better than my bid, was getting my big." We love you, big!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
