That wonderful time of year is quickly approaching, very soon sisters will be 4 hours short on sleep, running around with blistered feet and covering everything in a hand's reach with glitter, and I mean lots of glitter. All for our PMNs, so to make sure things run smoothly on your end here is your ultimate guide of do's and don'ts to sorority recruitment.
DO: Be Yourself & Be Honest
Rushing is all about finding your home away from home so its crucial that you stay true to yourself throughout the week. When it comes to finding where you belong, the opinion of others don't matter, so don't let them affect your decision. Just because all of your friends rush a different sorority doesn't mean that you have to too. Being in different sororities isn't going to end your friendship, so follow your heart. It's where you feel most at home. Most importantly don't lie, everything always come into the light. So don't pretend to be someone your not just to fit in.
DON'T: Listen to Sorority Stereotypes
By the time pref night rolls around you are going to have heard hundreds of rumors about the sororities, but their just that….rumors and were probably made up by people trying to sabotage each other or bored freshman boys. Walk into each room with an open mind, regardless of what you might have heard prior.
DO: Dress Appropriately
We're not the guy at the club scouting out the girl in the tightest dress. We don't want to see your ass so please dress appropriately. Each sorority is looking for ladies with class who will be able to represent their values, show them that that's you. You should be provided with a guide on what to wear on each night, if your not or in doubt any Rho Gamma or Pi Chi should be able to help you out! Think less Kim Kardashian and more Michelle Obama, Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn!
DON'T: Be Nervous
Honestly you have nothing to be nervous about, if anything we're more nervous about recruitment then you are. Rush week will be a breeze if you just go with the flow and let everything fall into place. The computer system has a sort of magic so just let it do its job.
DO: Ask Questions
PLEASE ask questions! This is your time to get any questions or concerns that you may have about that sorority cleared up. The sisters are there to tell you everything you need to know about their organization, take advantage of that. If you don't ask questions the conversation will be very one-sided and that will just be awkward for everyone. You've been warned.
DON'T: Think You're Guaranteed a Bid
Keep in mind that just because a sorority likes you doesn't mean you are guaranteed a bid. It's important to understand that you are rushing with a ton of other girls and sometimes things don't always work out as you had planned. But no matter what happens keep your chin up, you will end up in the sorority that is just right for you, promise.
DO: Think of Talking Points Before Hand
Awkward silence is just that, awkward. So do yourself a favor and come up with some things to talk about before hand. Better yet, think of a story from your life that really shows who you are as a person. The sister your talking to will not only appreciate it but it will give them a better idea of who you really are.
DONT: Bring up the 3 Bs
Boys, Booty and Booze are off limits, recruitment is not the place to talk about how wasted you got last Friday. Not only are the sisters not allow to discuss those things with you but it also makes them feel very awkward and makes you look like you might be rushing for the wrong reasons. Let them know your a girl, but nobody needs details, sam rule applies for drugs.
DO: Get Excited
Recruitment week is one of the best things about being in a sorority. At the end you will get to join a chapter of girls that you will be able to call sisters. These are the girls that will rush to your side on a bad night with ice cream in hand, stand beside you on your wedding day and grow their children with yours. So while it is stressful on both ends it will be one of the most memorable weeks of your life. So sit back and enjoy the ride because you are in for an exciting one!
Happy Recruitment Ladies!!
