They say you can’t choose your family, but, at least, you can choose your friends, but when I took on a "Little" in my sorority I had no idea what I was getting myself into. She became more than just a new best friend I had to guide through the new member process. She became my "Little Sister," with all of the perks and frustrations of being an older sibling. She became the family that I unknowingly chose.
From the moment I met her, we simply clicked. No one was surprised when Big/Little week came around, that we were going to paired. For a week, I feel like I became “A” from Pretty Little Liars in order to shower her with love and make reveal a genuine surprise. I’ll never forget the look of excitement on her face before she tackled me to the ground on that day.
She, in a way, became my best friend. From the late night phone calls, to the laughs that will last a life time. I feel like we can be open and honest about anything when we talk, and we can find a way to have fun no matter where we are, who we are with, or what we are doing. She is the person I can sit in a corner with at Chili’s and play the Game of Life, or take goofy pictures with while procrastinating during finals week.
Being a Big is not all fun and games though. I find myself having to play mom in certain situations. I do not fool around with grades, so when my Little is not doing her best, she gets mandatory study hours with big and goofy pictures are not allowed. If she is not at the event where she is supposed to be, she can expect 100 texts until she appears. I also find myself trying to be a better person and therefore a better role model for her. When I tell her about my mistakes, the words “do not be like Big” are generally my first reaction.
She also has a quirkiness to her that is almost childish and drives me crazy, both in a good and bad way. She forces me to eat cookies, she throws stuff at me, she is easily distracted and disappears. I find myself asking, “What are you doing?” at least once every time we hang out and I am never really sure I want to know the answer.
She is the one I spent hours crafting for before I knew what being a Big meant. She is the family I choose to give up sleep for, no matter what the issue. She is the best friend I have all my inside jokes with. She is my sorority Little Sister and I would not have it any other way.
