Ten years ago I was ten years old, lived in Miami, had a new baby sister, and so much more. When I was ten years old, I loved music. Back then, all I would pretty much listen to was rap, reggaeton, and alternative. Since then, my music preference has expanded. I still like all those genres but I added country, trap, rock, etc. I bought the "NOW CDs" because I had bought myself my first iPod the year after and before then I could not really buy individual songs. I either had my MP3 or the good old Sony CD Player.
Some of the songs that came out that year are still my jam. Every time I hear those songs, I am reminded that those songs are classics.
These are just ten of the songs that made us sing-along and dance every time we heard them.
1. "Candy Shop" - 50 Cent featuring Olivia
I know that I should not have been listening to this song at 10 years old, but I did, and it was somewhat acceptable thanks to where I lived—thank the Lord. It was a jam back in the day, and it is a jam now. This version is the original, but the version from "The Hangover" sung by a wedding singer gave it a run for its money.
2. "We Belong Together" - Mariah Carey
I had no idea who Mariah Carey was before this song. This girl can hit pitches only dogs can hear. She's considered a queen and diva and all that stuff, but let's be real, her voice is on point.
3. "My Humps" - Black Eyed Peas
If you don't know this song, then you have been living under a rock. This is a throwback to the style of 10 years ago. Fergie had the bangs, Will.I.Am had the long hair. It was for sure a party jam. It also made milk and Coco Puffs cereal really famous.
4. "Get It Poppin'" - Fat Joe featuring Nelly
Not many people knew this song even back in the day, but I loved it. I loved Fat Joe and Nelly, so a mix of both of them together was perfect. It was upbeat, super catchy, and dance-in-the-car-able. To this day when it comes on, I look like an idiot dancing because I get so hyped. Don't judge me.
5. "Sugar, We're Going Down" - Fall Out Boy
Yes kids, Fall Out Boy was a thing back in the day. This was one of their first "hits." You heard it everywhere and were okay with it. The only problem is that you had no clue what the chorus was saying. To this day I have no clue what it says, but I still love this song.
6. "La Tortura" - Shakira featuring Alejandro Sanz
This one goes out to my Spanish-speaking people. This video made every single girl want to have Shakira's dancing skills. This video made every single guy fall in love with Shakira. This song came out in both English and Spanish, but since I lived in Miami, I prefer the Spanish version.
7. "Photograph" - Nickelback
Ten years ago it was okay to like Nickelback. This song was pretty good and people liked it. It was on the radio 24/7 and you knew more than half of the words to it, if not, the chorus. Let's just leave it at that. And admit it, you liked this song.
8. "Feel Good Inc." - Gorillaz
I thought this band was very emo-like, but I embraced that and listened to their album. Many people know this song now. The music video was all cartoon, which was pretty cool. Also is a very chill song, but it still gets you hyped in a weird way.
9. "Gold Digger" - Kanye West featuring Jamie Foxx
This song will make everyone and their mom get out their seats and start dancing. That beat is like nothing else and is quickly recognized by almost everyone. This was also back when Kanye was not super cocky—yes kids, that was an actual thing that happened.
10. "Fix You" - Coldplay
AKA: The most perfect song in the history of the world ever.
Coldplay is to this day my favorite band and they sing my favorite song. When I first heard this song I loved it, but it was not my favorite. As I started getting older, I realized how beautiful this song is and really paid attention to the lyrics, which are truly one of a kind. My favorite song has to be in this playlist. It's the best song of all time in my opinion. If you've never heard it, please listen to it. If you have, listen to it again and think about how it can relate to your life now. I know nothing is perfect, but I am pretty sure this song might be the exception.
