Social media has done so much for the world and benefited us in ways that were previously unimaginable, but at what point does too much of good thing, become a bad thing?
We live in a time where social media doesn't even seem like an option anymore, but a necessity. Social media is a tool that can be both beneficial and disadvantageous at the same time. Nowadays there are hundreds, if not thousands, of different social media sites ranging from the big names such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.. all the way to Wee-World(a social media designed for ages 9-17), Yik-Yak and whisper(which are more anti-social sites), and the multitude of dating sites such as Tinder and AmishCrush.com .
There are so many practical benefits to having these tools at our disposal, and yet the biggest use for social media seems to be so you can "creep" on someone to either gather information about them or just make sure they aren't some serial killer. Social media seems to have its hold on us in a way that nothing else does, when we're bored we grab our phone and check our timelines, when we're in an awkward social situation we grab our phones and stare at the screen to avoid eye contact, a strong majority of people nowadays can't even use the restroom without checking their phones! Granted our phones have many other functions besides being our vessel to social media, but we all know the reason you have that iPhone 6 Plus is so you can use social media on an IMAX sized screen. Just walking around campus you can see people absolutely glued to their phones, having no idea of their surroundings. I am certainly by no means an exception to this rule, by the way.
This issue starts to go so much deeper than just that though. Social media is beginning to give people an inflated sense of ego. There are certain people that post 50 tweets a day as if there's someone out there concerned for how their peanut butter jelly sandwich turned out. Some people have thousands of photos on their Instagram just incase we forgot what they looked like 10 minutes ago, and then others just use social media to blast their regurgitated political and religious views.
I'm hoping something can be done to remedy this rapidly increasing problem, because at this rate we won't even know how to verbally communicate in 10 years.
Oh and by the way, follow me on Twitter.
