There are so many different types of people that you meet when you go to college, and it's a beautiful thing. If you're lucky, you may even come across someone who identifies as a "grandma." No, they aren't an actual grandma, but their hobbies or social life resemble closely to that of an 80-year old woman. I, myself, am a self-proclaimed grandma and I don't think that it deters my college experience one bit.
I prefer to stay in on Thursday and Friday nights. As the girls down the hall get ready for a night out on the town, I choose to stay in the comfort of my room and Netflix or work on some art. While people are hitting the bars, I am busy working on my newest crochet project. I have no interest in parties, unless if they are small social gatherings with people that I actually know. "Going out" for me consists of hitting the mall, grabbing some fro-yo, or seeing a movie.
Being a grandma doesn't mean that I'm not getting the "college experience". Sure, I might not be black-out drunk or do things that I regret later, but the college experience is different for everyone and mine just happens to be more serene and laid back. My social life might be that of a grandma's, but I'm just as involved as my fellow peers on campus. I keep myself busy with multiple clubs and my service sorority, and I don't feel bad wanting to have a night or two to myself. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a hermit in my room, and I do socialize, just not on Thursday or Friday nights because that's my "me time."
There's no shame in being a grandma. My friends are more social than I am, and I cheer them on and hope that they have a great night out while I stay comfortable in my room. I don't think any less of the people that choose to go out because all of us have a choice. We all have needs; some let loose by going out, but my needs after a long week consists of cuddling up with a good book or a season of my current favorite Netflix show.
All in all, I love being a grandma. I've never been one that likes to drink and party, and going to college and being surrounded by that sort of scene was never going to change that. To all of the college-aged grandmas out there: You do you.
