When deciding where to go to college I was excited by the idea of going somewhere cold that could potentially get a lot of snow. Some people want to go as far south as possible to avoid the cold weather, but I usually don't mind it.
The first winter in Blacksburg is always rough when you experience the wind walking across the Drillfield for the first time. The wind that hurts your face and freezes your hands and ears.
In my opinion, there is no point in being cold if it is not going to snow. The snow makes the frigid weather bearable and even enjoyable. The chance of snow is always exciting to me while others dread it. So many people have a love-hate relationship with snow. As much as people like to look at it or go out in it, it causes so many problems at the same time. Snow can be a beautiful and peaceful thing at times when you can just enjoy it with no other worries. When you have things to do and places to be, it is just a nuisance. It leads to cancellations or unsafe driving conditions that could lead to even more problems.
As a kid, it was the best feeling to wake up to cancelled school and have the day to do whatever you wanted. I remember waking up extra early just to check if school was cancelled so I could go back to sleep until I wanted to wake back up for the day. Now in college while school is not usually cancelled, the chance of snow still brings out the kid in all of us as we hope to have a snow day and a chance to just enjoy the snow without stress.
