My Love/Hate Relationship with Winter

Because Who Doesn't Hate the Cold?

My Love/Hate Relationship with Winter

It is that time of year again. The time where Mariah Carey Christmas music is played nonstop, Starbucks red holiday cups are back, and snow is just beginning to fall. How exciting is this?! Memories of making snowmen with your siblings, sledding until it's dark outside, and drinking hot cocoa by the warm fire begin to make you smile. After taking a moment to visualize this beautiful time, let's just think about walking to an exam in the snow. As you can imagine, winter is not so appealing to college students. This is where we begin to have mixed feelings on our relationship with winter. Here are just a few things we love and hate about this time of year.

BEST:

1. Winter Break

This is the only thing getting us college students through final exam week. Winter break is the best because no alarms, homework, or exams. Winter break give us the time to rejuvenate our brains before we start back up in the spring.

2. Holidays

Holidays are the best because you get to spend time with your loved ones. The holiday season usually consists of overeating yummy sweets, playing games with the family in your pjs, and jamming out to holiday music. And who doesn't love binge watching all of their favorite holiday movies?

3. Hot Cocoa

This is the only time out of the entire year that I will choose to drink hot cocoa over coffee. Nothing beats getting all cuddled up in your fuzzy blanket with slippers and your brand new pjs, while sitting by the fire drinking hot cocoa.

4. Heated Car Seats

Who doesn't love heated seats?? This is by far the best invention of the century. When it is nearly below zero outside, getting in your icy, cold car can be treacherous. Now you can be all cozy in the car with your heated seats.

5. Sweaters

Big, comfy, cozy sweaters are the best to just lounge around the house and curl up while reading your favorite book.

WORST

1. Walking to Class

We all dread morning classes, but what is worse than walking to your class in the cold? Falling on the icy sidewalk, and spilling your hot cocoa all over yourself.

2. Scraping Off Your Car

I literally cringe thinking about scraping the snow and ice off of my windshield in the morning.

3. Icy Roads

Driving in severe weather is bad enough, but black ice is highly dangerous because you are usually unaware that it is there, and this usually leads to accidents. So, at this point it is just best to stay inside all day.

4. Getting Sick

Chapped lips, tissues, and cold medicine describe winter season in a nutshell. Getting a cold is the worst during the school year because you lose all motivation and just want to sleep all day.

5. It's Not Summer

Laying out at the beach, swimming, and being tan are just some of the best things about summer. Unfortunately, during the winter season this is not possible unless you fly down to Florida like everyone else.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
