"Saturday Night Live" will soon grace us with its comedic presence once again on Oct. 3, with host, Miley Cyrus. For 41 years SNL has been going strong and is not going any where any time soon. I have grown up watching SNL and have encountered many characters, who are absolutely absurd in the best way possible.
These characters keep people laughing because the characters are created in a manner that is relatable to people we encounter everyday. When I watch the show I can count on being introduced to a new character that resembles some aspect of either myself or one of my friends.
- Debbie Downer: The name says it all. You win a trip to Disney, and Debbie’s there to tell you it’s crawling with disease. She can be a bit of a downer and at times offensive, but brings out the best-unexpected laughter.
- Gilly: The prankster, her sly “Sorry” is truly unapologetic. You may be the butt of her jokes, but you can’t deny you appreciate her mischievousness.
- Matt Foley: You fail a test, he is ready to pull you up by your bootstraps and tell you to get your mind right, or you will be “living in a van down by the river.” The inspirational speeches come with a lot of enthusiasm and maybe a little fear.
- Penelope: You cannot be better than Penelope, only worse. Whatever achievements you have completed, she will be sure to one-up you. Her interjections in conversation may irk you, but she just makes you strive for better.
- Georg Festrunk and Yortuk: These two wild and crazy guys are inseparable. When they are together they may not have the best social skills, but they are just two unique guys looking to have a “swinging” time with some fox-y ladies.
- The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started A Conversation With at a Party: She is informative, but in the worst way because it is inaccurate. She means well when she contributes to the conversation, and you can tell she is passionate about worldly matters. However, she thinks origami is Spanish for goose.
- Target Lady: This is the friend who tries to make the best out of most situations, even if it means being overly enthusiastic and in your face. Her odd quirks constantly keep you entertained. She is always sure to say something you never thought you would hear like “I have every issue of Sassy magazine. I like to cut out the models’ eyes and put them on my eyelids, so when I’m asleep my birds never feel alone and the ghosts think I’m awake.”
- Kaitlyn: She is always on the go, and ready to try new things. Her excitement and hyper antics never fail to extend to those around her.
- Sally O’Malley: She likes to kick, stretch, annnnnnd kick. Age is no matter to her; she greets every birthday with a smile. Positivity and self-motivation are her guides through life.
- The Love-ahs, Roger and Virginia Klarvin: Your friend has herself a BAE. And you never hear the end of it.
- Dooneese: She is without a doubt a SNL fan favorite. Dooneese is that friend that you are never quite sure of what is going on in her head. Nothing she does can be explained; it just happens.
- Bill Swerski's Superfans: He is the Sports fanatic. Vols to the wall -- all day, errday. You can be sure to see him on the jumbotron at every game yelling “DAAAAA VOLS!”
- Nadeen: She has the ability to make every situation a minuscule moment, no matter how bad. When trying to resolve a tricky situation she is sure to make everyone “SIMMMA DOWN NOW.”
- Randy Graves: The frat star, he cannot go any where without a slight mention of his fraternity. Although he has the appearance of the stereotypical fraternity guy, he never fails to make every person he talks to feel like the most important person in the room.
- Patriotic Will Ferrell: Date parties are his thing; he is known to take themes to a whole new level even if it may offend.
- Morgan and Krya – From Girlfriends Talk Show: Krya maybe doesn’t go for the best guys. Guys do not treat her the way she deserves, but she continuously makes excuses for them saying, “my boyfriend is crazy.” As quickly as she can snatch up a new man, she snatches up new friends just as easy. Although she has a lot of friends, she keeps her bestie, Morgan, by her side at all times.
- Morgan: Sometimes she feels pushed aside from all of Krya’s new friends, but she is loyal to the bone and has no shame in who she is.
- Stefon: The person you text on a Saturday night to hang – he knows where everyone is and it never fails to be an interesting night when he is around.
- Leslie Jones: Speaks her mind at all times, and you listen because you maybe a little scared of her.
- Protective Brother, Eddie: The friend that is going to give you and your friends’ BAE a hard time because there is nothing worse than someone hurting a member of his crew.
Consider yourself lucky if you have these characters in your life, without them life wouldn't be quite as funny or entertaining.
