Being from a small town can make going to college exciting. There are so many strange things about moving to a bigger city, simply because they are new.You know you're from small town New York when:
1. Your favorite coffee shop is a local place that everyone assumes you're mistaking for Dunkin Donuts; no it's Dippin Donuts
2. There are more pizza shops than people
3. The most exciting thing to do is get coffee and go to Walmart
4. The only time you see more than ten people outside is it at Canal Fest (or your local carnival/festival)
5. Crosswalks are a mere decoration
6. Hitting a deer is more common than hitting another car
7. It takes a five-minute drive to find a densely wooded area
8. The local weirdo
9. You've known everyone your age since you were 10
10. All the mom and pop shops
11. There's one ice cream place and everyone adores it.
12. The best fries in town are at the softball field... Which is next to a cemetery
13. Several elementary schools feature a cemetery right next to them; talk about creepy
14. The boulevard is empty after 9pm
15. You have no idea what actual night life is like; unless you go to the oddly placed casino
16. You find yourself teaching others how to drive when they encounter deer, snow, or crazy hills
17. You've wasted at least one full tank of gas just driving around because there's nothing else to do.
18. Many well-established businesses are in not so old houses that still look like houses
19. Building a Wegmans would destroy the town's economy; where would we put it anyway?
20. There's maybe three cultural restaurants and they're all Chinese food.
How do you spot a person from a small town? They've never had Indian food. They take forever to order at Starbucks because the menu is still new and exciting. They are always craving pizza but refuse to eat dining hall pizza (it's just not the same). They easily get lost in Downtown. Most importantly, if you find us at Fisher, we are overly excited to try every new thing, yet still feel homie!
