"Stop degrading thin people. Stop thin shaming." - Nichole LaBarge
In the whole entire world, body shaming exists. Men do it, women do it, everyone does it. But this time it affected myself, firsthand. Naturally, I am thin and fairly tall. I always hear the comments "Do you even eat?" "Are you anorexic?" I mean, the list goes on. Ignorance really is bliss I guess. But why do people body shame? It's cruel and mean. Everyone gets upset when people are shamed for being heavier than the average weight, but what about the rest of us who are seen as "thin," don't we matter too?
I have had "friends" criticize not only my weight, but the fact that models are generally thin. "It's about time plus-size models are on the covers of magazines, and not girls who look like toothpicks." The exact words I've heard from people. But is it even fair to criticize us women for being thin? No. It's not. Genetics have a lot to do with our weight. I'd like to think of myself as healthy, athletic and in shape. But due to the fact that I wear size smalls, makes me an easy target to pick on.
Body shaming doesn't happen to people of heavier weights. It happens to people who are thin too. Why can't we all just be nice? If you're unhappy, only you can change it. No one is going to do it for you. I've learned to block out the comments of people's weight, but I know I'm not the only person dealing with "skinny shaming." I used to laugh off the comments made toward my weight and other people's weight, but I won't any longer. Enough with the hate. Enough with the shaming. And enough with the ignorance.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone skinny shame myself or someone else, I'd be a millionaire. Guaranteed. Who are we to judge? Weight is such a tricky topic to discuss in today's society, because we compare weight with beauty. Many women I know are always talking about their diets, how much weight they want to lose, and what guys like certain body types: skinny, curvy, tall, short, etc. Why as humans, do we judge so harshly how a person looks?
Be kind to others. Try to remember that curvy human beings aren't the only ones who are shamed for how they look. We ALL are.
