Dear little sister,

From the day you were born I never thought I would have a sister who was also my best friend. Being seven years apart, I always thought we were going to be the type of siblings who never got along and lived two completely separate lives. The sisters who never talk, hang out or share things with each other. I am so blessed that we are completely the opposite. As we both have grown older I feel that our bond has just grown stronger. I am so grateful to have a sister who is as smart, beautiful and funny as you are. This letter is to let you know just how much I love you and the relationship we have.

Don't get me wrong, our relationship is not perfect. Like all sisters there is the occasional screaming match, the bickering, and the hitting and punching matches that always start off as just playing around, at least that's what we tell Mom. Sometimes you can drive me completely crazy, but through all the fighting we always manage to work it out.

One thing about our relationship is that you trust me. You tell me things that you can't share with Mom and Dad and that makes me feel so accomplished as a big sister. I never want you to feel that you cannot come to me. I am always available to you at any time. I like being the one you can come to, and I want you to always remember that.

The hardest thing about being a big sister is being away at school has made it to where I am not there for the milestones in your life. My first year away at school was your first year in middle school. That was a time I really wanted to be there for you. I know how hard middle school was for me, and I wanted to give you all my words of wisdom. Then, my senior year at UAB was your first year in high school. That was something I really wanted to be around for, but at least I was able to drive you on your first day. On the weekends when I come home, I always try to share my great knowledge of high school and give you my advice on everything, because, well, you know how smart I am. I try so hard to be there for everything you do, like all the dance recitals, Girl Scout events and graduation ceremonies. I am so happy that you have always wanted me to be at those things and ask me to come. You always ask if my schedule will allow me to be at your different events. You supported me though all my school functions such as the tons of choir concerts and softball games, and now it is my turn to be your cheerleader and just know I am your biggest fan. Luckily I have only missed once dance recital so far and I hope that's the only thing I ever miss. You are so talented and I love watching you succeed.

My favorite thing about being your sister is how well we get along. We have the same humor and a lot of the same hobbies. When I am home we do everything together, from laying in Mom and Dad's bed watching Netflix to going out shopping. Having the same humor as me is great because some people don't understand it like you do. Some of the things we talk about and joke about might worry people. I think our parents even worry about us sometimes. When I come home on Fridays I can't wait for you to get out of school so we can hang out and begin our weekend. I cherish the time I get to spend with you, because when you are off at college and I am doing lord knows what, 'cause I sure don't, we will have less time to hang out. But let's be real, I will probably be living with you waiting for you to be rich on day. You are never getting rid of me!

You have grown into such a beautiful young lady and I am so excited to see what future holds for you. You are so smart and can do anything you set your mind to. When you tell me all the plans you have for yourself after high school I get so excited for you. You have huge dreams that you are way more than capable of achieving. I am grateful to be your big sister and I am so proud of you and love you so much.

Love,

Your big sister

"For there is no friend like a sister in calm and stormy weather; To cheer one on the tedious way, to teach one if one goes astray, to lift one if one totters down, to strengthen whilst one stands."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
