In fifth grade, my teacher had all the kids in my class write down their wish for the school year. Being in only fifth grade, most people wrote, "I want a new iPod," or, "I want to go to Disney World," but not me. My one and only wish was that I would get a little sister; halfway through the school year, I found out my wish was going to come true.
In sixth grade, my little sister Ella Grace was born and I was no longer the only girl in the family. Before then, it was just me and my dirt soaked and booger-y two younger brothers. It's not that they weren't enough, but when my mom went away for a "girls weekend," I wasn't a fan of being the only girl in the house. Now that my sister was born, that wouldn't be the case. Little did I know my sister would affect my life in many other ways and become my greatest blessing.
My sister quickly turned into my mini-me, watching everything I did... and copying it! She liked the Yankees from when she could talk because I did. I put ranch on everything I ate, so she put ranch on everything. I watched Hannah Montana, so she watched Hannah Montana. I slowly began to realize how much what I did affected her, and it made me a better person. I grew to learn that I had someone watching my every move, and my pre-teen mission was to be the best role model for my baby sister.
As I got older, my job as a role model for her became even more important. I went off to college and the distance made our relationship even stronger. I had the best roommate and friends who understood how important my sister was to me, and when she came to visit, they treated her like she was their own little sister.
In my freshman year in college, I joined Alpha Phi. I knew from recruitment that APhi was the only sorority that I could be myself in. I truly felt at home when I stepped into that room during every round. A few months later I knew I had made the right choice. My family came to visit and I took my sister to a Greek event and even let her wear one of my Alpha Phi shirts. She meshed right in with me and my sisters, and by the end of the night, I couldn't get her to leave because she had so much fun. One of our sisters won a raffle prize and gave it to Ella, and we even took a big-little-mini-me picture with my big.
She considered my big to be her big too since she was my little sister. Two years later I finally got a little sister in Alpha Phi, and Ella was so excited because she thought that meant that she had another sister too. After spending that night with my sisters, my mini-me decided she was going to be an Alpha Phi one day. Even though she is now just 10 years old, whenever she looks up colleges (yes, she already does), if they do not have a chapter of Alpha Phi, then it is not the college for her.Having someone special watching your every move pushes you to be the best version of yourself. Because what you do affects not only your life but also the life of the little girl who you are influencing. To my little sister: one day you will understand the sincere impact you have on my life because I know I have your little feet following me through every step of mine. That November night in 2005 will always be one of the best milestones in my life. It was the night my biggest blessing was born and the night that I got the best job I'll ever have in being a role model for my little one.
