If you clicked on this, you are either sitting in my position or you're curious as to how I got to this point. Some people find it amusing, others find it sad, some find it annoying, and others think it's great. It really depends on the person. I for one don't really care what people may say or think behind my back. I mean, sometimes I do -- or maybe a lot of times -- but that doesn't matter here. It just depends on the day and whether or not you are really happy with yourself and where you currently are in your life. As you will read later on, I will explain where I am currently at and what my thought process is at this moment in time. So onwards we go...
Back in high school, I was one of those really self-conscious and quiet kids. I had friends, but I was the awkward one. I now fully embrace this. It's a great feeling, actually. But in high school, it was really the other way around. When it came to girls, let's just say things never went all that well. When I look back at it now, I had some really sweet and attractive girls who liked me, but my low self-esteem and extreme self-consciousness made me think that they were just kidding. That these girls didn't actually like me. That they could do better than me. That they just wanted to get with my brother (which was a thing on a few occasions). There were even a few girls that liked me, and I laughed at it because I didn't believe that a girl like that could like a guy like me.
There were a few that I really did like and enjoyed being around, but I didn't have enough confidence to ask any of them out. It just wasn't there and I had really bad nerves as well. I would say I was going to do something but really I wouldn't be able to bring myself to really do it. As you can tell, the lack of confidence and low self-esteem was a very big problem for me.
Senior year was when I started cracking the shell. However, by then it was too late to start anything and college was right around the corner. It's funny because I went to a community college that was actually around the corner from my high school. Which is where I take us next!
When I was at my community college, I was looking around for a while and had a “thing” for a bit. However, just like high school, it didn't work out. Other than that, I only liked one gal. It was community college -- I was going to be out of there and in a new college within about two years so there wasn't really a point to it. The best thing about my community college, though, was that I really broke down a lot of barriers that I had. I became extremely talkative, my nerves were finally going away, and my confidence and self-esteem were slowly on the rise. It was a really great experience, especially with such a wonderful friend group that I had over those two years and still have today.
Now I am at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Maryland, and while I was reserved as usual during the first few weeks, it seems as though I am starting to open up and my confidence is reaching new heights. There are other little things that have been coming along, but dating hasn't really been a thing as of yet. I have been more focused on my studies than anything else. Also, I am not in favor of the hookup culture at all and have some morals that I keep hold to. A lot of people have told me that it is college and I only live it once. However, I don't need to have sex, get drunk, and do drugs with random individuals in order to enjoy myself. So to other people in my position, don't give into what others say. Be yourself and things will start to look up in the future. Just give it time. I've given it only 21 years and things have finally been looking up!
If there is anything I should do when it comes to my friends, that would be for me to say thank you to all of them for sticking with me through thick and thin and helping me along the way. From my super close friends from high school to all my best friends from college, I wouldn't be in the place I am today if it wasn't for them. So this is a big thank you to all of them. Of course, they can be the most annoying people in the world because of me being single and above all “a virgin” at the age of 21, but I still love them all. To all of you currently reading this, you guys have been extremely supportive and I love you all for that. Sure, you all get a little bit pushy here and there or come up with some insane suggestions, but that's what friends are for (at least in my opinion). Your attempts at making me try fake dating scenes with your current girlfriend and having the most awkward conversations imaginable with me about dating life are just some of the things that I will never forget. You guys are absolutely amazing and wonderful people. I can promise you all that eventually something will happen. When? Well there still seems to be a bright spot coming along so maybe sooner than we have all thought!
Let me say one more thing: to everyone who is in my position, male or female, do not worry about being single and/or a virgin. It's not like the world is suddenly going to end or everyone is going to hate you for it. You all have so many more important things to worry about than just losing your virginity. Don't just give up and look for anything to happen. Do it with someone that you love and that loves you back. It's a once and done type of deal, so make it count. Don't ruin your first experience because you're fed up with people poking fun at you about how many times they've done it. Don't listen to them and just be yourself.
I used to think about just getting it over with, but I have come to realize that it is a special moment in everyone's life and it shouldn't be ruined on a hookup. You're all only in your teens, 20's, or maybe even 30's. You are all still very young. Remember, most people don't really die until they're 80! So give it a chance to have something develop on its own. Besides, it's extremely rare in this day in age to be a virgin. It's like finding a magical unicorn! Be proud of who you are and where you're at in life and focus your mind on more important issues at hand...like who you will be voting for in this year's election! That is definitely more important than worrying about your virginity.
