Like the majority of Americans, I was disappointed by the result of the presidential election. However, we do need to accept the result. In some way, we deserve what we got. No one has made a real effort to reform the electoral college in decades which has led to candidates winning the presidency and losing the popular vote. Initially, I thought there were no positives to a Trump presidency, but after some thought, I realized I was wrong. So here are some good things that may come out of this fiasco.
First off, Trump, his supporters, and Republicans may finally stop complaining that the media and system are biased against them. Trump got billions of dollars of free coverage during this election cycle and won even though his opponent got more votes. Actually, Hillary Clinton should be the one complaining. The media is biased toward sensationalism which Trump provided. The system is biased toward valuing Trump votes more than Clinton votes. So hopefully these people who spent the last year complaining that everything was rigged against them can shut up.
Secondly, Trump doesn't have to follow an ideology, and he doesn't seem to have one to follow. There is endless evidence of Trump contradicting himself throughout the years and arguing for two different positions at different times. Unlike other politicians, his supporters don't care about his flip-flops. Therefore, he has the opportunity to take and implement good policy ideas from both Republicans and Democrats without being overly boxed in by whether something is a "conservative" or "liberal" plan. In fact, he's already saying he will be keeping some parts of Obamacare because in reality, there is both good and bad in it.
Third, we may have a shot at reducing the risk of terrorism if Trump really does cut off immigration from regions of the world which are breeding grounds for terrorism right now. It seems like the logical decision to reduce the risk of innocent people in our country being killed by extremists.
And finally, Republicans don't have an excuse to not get things done anymore. Most of them voted for and/or endorsed Donald Trump. They have majorities in both houses of Congress. They haven't been left to clean up an economic disaster like Obama was in 2008. If things don't work out for America through their policies, then hopefully Americans will know who to blame. They have zero excuses at this point because everything has been in their favor.
So do not lose hope, fellow Americans. In the end, Americans are fighters. We've survived this long I'm sure we can get through the next few years.
