Because the struggle was all too real.

10 Signs You Went to Catholic School
Terri Murphy

Most people seem to have a love/hate relationship with their Catholic school. Although the struggle was all too real, it was nice not having to worry about what you were going to wear every day, getting close with the few people in your class and having more school spirit than was ever necessary. You love to complain about how small it was or how you didn’t have classes to choose from, but honestly you loved all the craziness that came along with it such as:

1. How keeping a “secret” wasn’t a thing:

It was only a matter of days, hours, or minutes until everyone at your school knew something, and by something I mean everything.

2. Your rebellious side came out when it came to the dress code:

While it was nothing major, you got a small thrill from going against the dress code. It ranged from tucking your shirt under, but not actually tucking it in, to rolling your skirt slightly above fingertip length.

3. Speaking of the dress code—uniforms were your nemesis:

You probably hated every minute you had to wear a uniform, that is, until after you graduated. Suddenly, you really wish there was such a thing as a life uniform so you didn’t have to think twice about what to wear.

4. You (or someone you know) passed out at least once during school mass:

Sometimes it was from having a lack of sleep or breakfast, but usually an excessive amount of incense was to blame.

5. Dress down days were a big freaking deal:

This was the rare occasion you get to strut your stuff in some “normal” clothes. So you definitely planned your outfit ahead of time to make sure you would look good.

6. Dating someone in your own grade seemed weird:

You’ve most likely known everyone in your grade since kindergarten, so they’re more like brothers and sisters, not boyfriend/girlfriend material.

7. You can scout the bible like a pro:

You had so much experience in having to look up bible verses for religion class; you can probably find a passage in 5 seconds flat.

8. You never had a sex ed class:

No, seriously. You had health class, but you were never taught about sex. You were told abstinence was the way and that was the end of that.

9. Nothing started until you prayed:

Whether it was lunch, class, or a sporting event; it never officially started until a prayer was said.

10. You always had to leave room for the Holy Spirit:

School dances would always come with strict rules that you loved to ignore. Whether it was “leaving room for the holy spirit” or “no grinding,” these rules never seemed to stick.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
