Signs You Know You're NOT From California
Seppi Esfandi

I am California born and Nebraska raised. I have many friends who are California virgins and are dying to go. Visiting California is very different to living in California, let me tell you. I have been to California many, many times, but I never realized how different it is when you actually live here. There are many great opportunities and experiences that you just can't get anywhere else. Here are a few signs when you know you're just not California raised.

1. In-N-Out

You can't write an article about California without mentioning In-N-Out. Best and cheapest fast food place. Two words: animals fries.

2. Everyone is in jeans and a heavy coat and you're in a t-shirt and shorts

It's 60 degrees out and everyone is dressed like they live in the tundra.

3. Californians are the worst drivers

Don't even get me started about them driving in rain or snow. No one even honks.

4. "Hella"

Along with "dank", "low key", "sketchy", and "dipped." It's like I moved to a foreign country.

5. There's a fire on the side of the road or field

And no one seems to be worried.

6. You get yelled at when you call California, "Cali"

"It's not 'Cali,' it's California." Then you're hit with the rolled eyes and dirty looks.

7. Chipotle rules everything

Everyone is obsessed with burritos, let alone Chipotle. Where you at Qdoba?

8. You've been asked "Why do you live there?"

You get asked all the time why someone would want to live somewhere other than California, and, honestly, I have no idea.

9. You get charged for bags

If you go to the grocery store, they charge you 25 cents for a plastic/paper bag!

10. Gas is a thousand times more expensive

You are so used to gas under two dollars, you almost have a heart attack when you see five dollars!

11. There are actually things to do

Two hours from the beach, two hours from a forest, two hours from a lake, two hours from mountains. What is this wonderful place?

12. Where is a Walmart?

No one I know here has ever stepped foot in a Walmart.

13. Trying to find your go-to fast food

Raising Cane's? Runza? Arby's? Fazoli's? I miss you.

14. SoCal and NorCal

Ohhh, Southern California and Northern California.

15. Carpool lanes and FasTrak

What.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
