And I mean the absolute worst

9 Reasons Being Sick In College Without Your Mom Is The Worst

With the August month closing in, most people are getting ready to go back to college. But, if you're like me, then you have already. Supposed to be fun and exciting, right? More like wrong, especially in my case scenario. I found myself having nearly a 103-degree fever on the first day of classes this year. I also found myself without my mom to take care of me while I am sick at school. If you've ever been away from home and have been sick, you can probably relate to one of these things.

1. You have to schedule your own doctor appointments

This one is by far the worst. Nothing is scarier than having to talk to a stranger on the phone about what is wrong with you and then having to try and work out a time to fit into your schedule with this stranger.

2. Having to take yourself to your doctor's appointment

This one comes to a close second in being the worst. If you are lucky, you can go to a doctor's office on campus, but if you aren't lucky, you have to find a way to get there on your own. This often involves lots of walking, the last thing you want to do when you are sick.

3. Filling out paperwork

I swear I will have questions for my mother about what goes where and how to answer what until the day I die.

4. Waiting for your mom to tell the doctor your symptoms

Only to realize that she isn't there with you and you have to man-up and hope you tell the nurse everything that is wrong with you.

5. Staying hydrated

Even though you know that you need lots of fluids but no one is there to keep refilling your water bottle for you.

6. Having to remember to eat before you take your medicine

But having to fend for yourself when all you want is your mom to make you some chicken noodle soup and then deciding to take your medicine without food anyway because making food takes up too much of the energy you don't have.

7. Dealing with the pharmacy

When no one knows how to ask questions about your medication and its side effects like your mom.

8. Having no one there to encourage you to get some much needed rest

Because you are too busy doing all of the things that your mom would be doing for you while you're sick by yourself.

9. Having to stay in while all your friends go out

Since you don't want to risk getting even sicker but you know if your mom was there, she would gladly stay in with you even if that meant she would get sick too so instead you suffer all alone.

All in all, being sick is never fun. But being sick away from mom at school is the definition of my worst nightmare.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
