At this point, I've been a content creator for the Odyssey for going on two months now. I have published 5 articles, with only two of them really being widely read. However, before the first and in between those two articles, I continuously found myself at a loss when deciding what to write about.
However, I know I'm not experiencing the typical and always frustrating "writer's block", but instead my own insecurity when it comes to expressing my own opinion. You see with my tendency to overthink things, I often underestimate what my opinion is worth because I don't think I have enough information to support it.
What I found upon coming to college is that my standard for the amount of information needed before expressing one's opinion is unnecessarily high, at least in a social setting. I definitely share my opinion now more than I did in high school, but I know I still have a lot of learning to do.
But that's true of everyone, right? No one knows everything about everything, and still not that many people know everything about one topic. But when you decide to write for an audience, you should at least know a good amount of what you're writing about. I mean they say "write what you know" and what I know best is me, but I wouldn't dare write all my pieces about myself.
My first piece covered the aspect of my life that I am best known for lifting. The article that is often confused as my second piece covered my developing identity as a Black man in America. And to find topics other than those two that I know as much about is basically impossible.
So if I'm reluctant to share my opinion, and I refuse to write solely about myself, where do I go from here? Well even though you can't see me right now I am actually breaking out into a sweat thinking about only writing about myself. So I will be writing my opinion about a variety of topics including politics, current events, fitness, and even my day sometimes.
I only have one request of my reader (that's you) and that is to help me learn and develop my opinions by engaging me about the topics I write about. I understand that some of you might know more about a topic and if I say something that you think is incorrect or fails to take something crucial into account, tell me.
I can do all the research I want before I sit down and write my article, but there will without a doubt be something I forget to bring up or a perspective I do not consider.
Also, you're probably just an amazing person with an amazing opinion and it would be amazing if you told it to me. This piece feels like it should have been first, but I guess you could say it's introducing the pieces to come. Pieces that upon reading might have you thinking that I shouldn't be a writer.
