I strongly dislike the verb "hate," so much in fact that it rarely ever passes my lips. When it accidentally escapes, I am always quick to replace it with a different word. I will never correct myself, however, when I say that I hate guns.
I hate how guns tear our world in half. I hate the debates that are created over guns. I hate that I live in a country that is obsessed with guns. I hate that guns have more rights than some human beings. I hate that it is normal for one to feel safer while holding a gun, than not holding a gun. I hate that guns have given me all these reasons to hate them.
This strong hatred comes from a girl who does not own a gun, let alone has ever touched one before. Heck, I can count on my two hands the number of times I have actually seen a gun in real life. I grew up in a house where we weren't even allowed to have water guns or Nerf guns. No, not because my parents were some crazy anti-gun liberals but because my father worked for an insurance company where he saw gun-related accidents daily.
So yes, maybe I am a little biased and very naïve to the concept of owning a gun. But, no matter how hard I try, I will never understand America's obsession with guns. I mean, how many more innocent lives do we have to lose before someone ends this nonsense? How many more times am I going to wake up, scroll through Twitter and find a new hashtag trending in regards to a new mass shooting?
I am in no way stating that I believe the government should take away everyone's guns. That would be ridiculous. If that happened a war would break out between the divide in this country. Keep your hand guns and hunting guns if they make you feel so protected and powerful. I do not really care.
What I really care about is putting an end to these mass murders because I am sick of these reoccurring headlines in the news. I am sick of bad people getting their hands on guns and I am sick of good people being hurt or killed in these awful tragedies.
I am not apologizing for my complete left-wing rant because someone needs to say it. I am also not asking for a political argument to spiral from this rant of mine. I am simply asking for people to stop and actually think about this scary world we are inhabiting. Think about all the lives that have been affected by gun violence. Think about what you can do as an individual stop it.
