Short People Problems 101

If you're short and proud of it, here are some things that we may have in common

I never truly think that I'm a short person.

On a daily basis, I imagine myself to be much taller than 5'2 1/4" (every inch counts, even the fractions). It doesn't matter if I'm wearing heels or flats, in my head I'm 5'8". So, when I go to reach for something much higher than my hands can reach, there is the slightest bit of confusion.

If you're short and proud of it, or even if you think that you're short, here are some things we may have in common.

1. Reaching the top shelf of anything.

Obviously, this is a daily struggle for anyone under 5'5". Usually, this will happen in a store or in your own home where there is someone who can help you out. But, if there isn't anyone around, counter tops, stools, and chairs become your best friends.

2. Walking with someone who has longer legs.

Note to all people blessed with height: SLOW DOWN. We have little legs, please respect our attempt to match your wicked speed.

3. Finding the perfect pair of pants.

I will always have this problem. Either the length is perfect, but the waist is too tight, or the waist is up to my ribs and the length reaches eight feet under. I've learned to work with it.

4. Being shorter than people several years younger than you.

This is just frustrating, but also a great opportunity to inform them of all the great experience and wisdom you have. Height doesn't matter when it comes to life experiences.

5. Getting a Bachelor's Degree in driving blindly because the visor never reaches your eyes.

As much as I would like to deny that this has happened to me, I can think of several occasions. On the bright side, my posture improves tremendously every time.

6. Wearing t-shirts as dresses because you can.

Never to be worn out of the house, but it saves the chore of putting pants on when you go to the bathroom to brush your teeth.

7. Gaining five pounds is like gaining twenty.

This is not fair. At all.

8. Trying to fold a big blanket on your own.

This can have nothing, yet everything to do with height. Stubbornness can lead to a difficult experience, but if you can conquer the over-sized blanket, you can do anything.

Bottom line, let's be respectful of all those of varying height because everyone's living in there own world. Some are closer to the gems of the earth, while others are able to reach for the stars. Best case scenario: We can all share in life's riches.
Let's try to help each other out. It's just good manners.

Always,

Frances McKinley

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
