To My Senior Friends Graduating Next Month

Yes, I'm feeling sentimental. Don't let it get to your big heads.

To My Senior Friends Graduating Next Month
Alex Nelson

With the semester quickly winding down, I am plagued with a seemingly never-ending stream of papers, exams and group projects. However, even with all of the craziness, I can't help but reminisce on the memories I've made throughout the years with friends I will never forget…especially the ones leaving me in just a few short weeks.

And so, my senior friends (you know who you are), this one is dedicated to you:

Thank you for teaching me everything I needed to know.

From registering for classes and taking the best professors, to inviting me to all of the best parties and showing me how to take my very first beer bong (sorry Dad), you've had my back every step of the way. Thanks to you, I never had to worry about how I would find my classrooms or what I would do next weekend because you did it first and were always more than willing to show me the way.

Thank you for always looking out for me.

I admit that there were times when I thought I knew better--hey, sometimes I did, and times when I wanted to learn from my own mistakes instead, and you let me. But I will be the first to say that you were always there to pick up the pieces when I did… and you never said I told you so (okay, maybe once or twice).

Thank you for reminding me it's important to study hard but to have fun too.

Yes, school comes first. But without you dragging my butt out of the library every now and then (more "now" than "then"), we wouldn't have become the best of friends or made all of the cherished memories--or lack there of, that we now have.

Thank you for the unforgettable trips.

Whether it was a weekend trip to a concert or football game, or a week-long spring break trip to sandy beaches, you always made sure we had the best of times. You never let excuses such as "money's tight" or "I have so much to do this weekend" keep me behind, and for that I will always be grateful.

Thank you for pushing me to be my best.

Secrets out, I look up to you. Over the last few years, I've been there as you've aced tests, nailed interviews and eventually landed your dream job. Thank you for inspiring me every day to chase my dreams and to never give up.

But I have news for you...

It's your turn to be fresh meat now.

I hate to break it to you, but your days of having it all figured out are quickly coming to an end. In just a month, you will be walking toward your diploma (with me in the audience, of course) and after that, to the next step of your life. Whether that be your first full-time job, grad school or a year off to travel the world, it will be filled with many new and unexpected journeys and I couldn't be more excited for you. Thank you for teaching me everything I need to know about this college-lifestyle we lead and I wish you all the very best as you take on your next endeavors.

Happy Adult-ing. You will be missed.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
