10 things to do while living in a Small Town

Dahlonega, Ga is a small town located in Norther Georgia about an hour east of Atlanta. Tourists are attracted to it due to it being known as the first place in North America to have the first gold rush. Many would describe it as "cute" and/or "delightful". Many college students love the University of North Georgia and the small town lifestyle it offers. However, the local teenagers just might disagree. With one Walmart and a few fast food restaurants, Dahlonega does not have much to offer to the small town's youth. This has led to an increased drug problem, but also a need to leave ASAP. However, teens do bide their time and here are the ten things even YOU can do if you ever visit Dahlonega, Ga.

#1- A town favorite first date is walk around the historic square. A couple can head into the small stores, have small talk, and after they can eat at the resident mexican restaurant, Pueblos. Many couples end up engaged or pregnant before their time is up in Lumpkin. It is definetly a great date idea for any young singles looking to get a good head start into a relationship. Make sure to check out the awesome antique stores and then stop for an hour or two at the college starbucks!

#2- go to Dawsonville! They have a movie theatre and an outlet mall!

#3- Go to Yahoola creek park. Many locals go to Yahoola Creek Park to relax outside, play sports, or just exercise. It is a beautiful park with many hiking trails and even a secret cave for the kids to go smoke weed in! It truly is the ideal place for the teens! They love to visit with friends, picnic, or literally just sit in their car. If you're lucky you might spot some of those couples from the square at the tennis courts making out. The most romantic place to be.

#4- Go to Gainesville. It is right next door and they have a cinnabon.

#5- Go to other people's houses. It is ALL happening at the most popular spot in town, some kid's house. Many will party till the early morning and then crash at their friend's house. The kids love to listen to their favorite music while knocking back a Natty Lite and arguing who;s truck is bigger. Some people even have pools and/or a trampoline. You might just be lucky enough to see a cop car roll up to the house when their old neighbor decides that enough is enough.

#6- Go to Forsyth. I hear they have a Texas Roadhouse and a BIGGER Goodwill. Definetly worth the stop if you want to bowl or see a movie. Also all the cool kids go to the Avenues.

#7- Go to Walmart and just walk around a little bit. Many will spend their time roaming the aisles of the local Walmart. They will ride skateboards, steal things, and really just mess everything up for the workers. If you go to the Walmart late enough you will see a ring of trucks or as many call it "hells circle". You'll find some good ole' country books drinking whiskey and spitting dip with the occasional lady sitting beside them. Do NOT provoke them,

#8- go to Atlanta, I hear they have a lot of things like a zoo and aquarium????

#9- Go out to eat at Zaxbys. Zaxbys is fine dining and should be treated as such in Dahlonega. Make sure to bring your student ID to get the discount and eat a mildly dirty table while an old man stares at you because you're "ruining America"

#10- go literally anywhere else

And that's it! These are just some great local activities to do in Dahlonega, Ga! Make sure you didn't mean to come to Ellijay. You will know by the lack of apple signs!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
