Between pitch bends and empty pitchers, we find new ways of living and hope, in the next life we will be better.
The beast with the yeast has returned to our humble bay area and, needless to say, the reception was quite warm at the New World Brewery, as New Brunswick’s Screaming Females pleasured audience members with an electric show.
Audience members from the front rows to the back, knees and necks simultaneously seem to give out at the same time, as those in the back seem to grow taller; extending hands, extending phones.
“Hey, we're Screaming Females, we're from New Brunswick, New Jersey,” whispered Marissa Paternoster lightly. “This is our second time in Tampa.”
“Thank you for coming,” a voice from the crowd responded.
This past Friday is the second time Screaming Females has stopped in the bay area. The first time at Big Prefest in Little Ybor 2, where I was able to catch up and interview them.
This time, I was quite happy being able to enjoy the performance as a fan. It's impossible to put out the fire that is Paternoster.
Paternoster is a force to be reckoned with, but that is to be expected for one of SPIN magazines 100 greatest guitar players of all time. Paternoster dazzled as she literally gives her entire body to the song. Using her right foot to stomp on her effect box, to throwing that same leg up, her fingers crawling their way up the neck of her G&L guitar and howling like a man who has stared into the heart of a dark star.
That fire is further intensified by the bond between bassist Michael "King Mike" Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty, who between songs, would throw playful looks at one another almost as if they’re complementing each other on the performance.
And what a performance! After the show, I caught King Mike icing down his hand, so I asked if Screaming Females would return for this year's Fest?
“We won’t be playing but I’m thinking of come down to see some bands play," he said. Always a fan of music, Screaming Females are touring with Aye Nako, a Queercore Punk band from Brooklyn, New York.
The four-piece is made up of Jade, Joe, Mars and Shenna, and was well received.
Reeking of heavy noise and catchy basslines over the intricate drum patterns, the tunes are the best since Strawberry Girls. Sheena proved she doesn’t have time for rudimental drumming signatures. Aye Nako was a perfect fit to set up the vibe for Screaming Females and both bands were a blast to watch.
Catch Aye Nako and Screaming Females as they continue their tour in St. Louis, Missouri at Off Broadway on the 24th and in Bloomington, Indianapolis at The Bishop on the 25th.
