From cute pumpkins to superheroes to nerds to sexy nurses, Halloween is the one day during the year that we can pretend to be something or someone other than ourselves. Let's face it, similar to how the way we dress and behave changes with age, so do our Halloween costumes.
1. 0-5 Years Old: "The Chubby Pumpkin"
Chubby pumpkins, ladybugs, butterflies, and bumblebees. As infants and toddlers, our Halloween costume is completely out of our control. So although we probably looked like a vegetable, an insect, or an animal, at least our cuteness overshadowed any costume we wore at this stage.
2. 6-12 Years Old: "The Classics"
The classic superhero, princess, witch, or pirate is almost always a kid's Halloween costume at some point during this stage. This is the stage where children fully embrace their Halloween costumes and enjoy delving into the world of Spider man and Cinderella for a day. As carefree and creative kids, "The Classic" Halloween costumes end up being being the most enjoyable.
3. 13-17 Years Old: "Do I Even Halloween?"
The pair of cat ears and nerd glasses were always my go-to's during this stage. This was the time where I was unsure how to correctly "do Halloween" and to what extent I should dress up. At least as a cat or a nerd or even a mouse, as the classic Karen Smith puts it, I was able to balance out my Halloween costume with my uncertainty that I felt, and that most teenagers feel at this age.
4. 18-mid 20s: "Does A Halloween Costume Involve Clothes?"
I like to attribute the extremely revealing costumes or no costumes at all that are typically seen at this stage, to the fact that many of us are broke college students. Therefore, the less we have in our bank accounts, the less we wear on Halloween.
5. 20s-30s and up: "The Never-Ending Cycle"
As parents, don't think your Halloween days are over. Looks like it's your turn to dress up your Halloween-crazed children and take them trick-or-treating on the cold nights of October 31st. The cycle repeats, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't continue dressing up to celebrate a day that probably holds many memories throughout your own life.
