The long awaited Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released this past weekend and it was something to be admired. A film that Star Wars fans will love. I promise that this review will not have any spoilers. Don't worry.
When I went to the theatre I figured that the film would be enjoyable but nothing too amazing. To my surprise I was mistaken. The film was made very well. If you are a true Star Wars fan you already know that the films main plot is that the rebellion has a plan to find and steal the plans for the empires newest weapon the death star. Since I have seen the other films I knew what the end result of the film would be. Even though the films ending is already known before you see it, it doesn’t mean that the film is predictable at all. You may know how the story will end before you go see it but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t invested and captivated by it when watching. The stakes are raised higher and higher for the characters in the film. Not to mention the characters are characters that you care about. Which is a very big deal in any film, because if you don’t care for the characters why are you even watching? Being that this is sort of a bridge between the first three films and the last three films it is a very rewarding as a Star Wars fan to see more stories spin off from the original series. Director Gareth Edwards and the team of writers who created the movie did an excellent job with taking the Star Wars universe and expanding it. It’s a different look and take on the Star Wars saga. Usually the films are centered around the story of the struggle between the Jedi and Sith. This movie gives a cast of characters who, in the past films, you would see in the background. While more well known lightsaber wielding characters would be in the foreground. The cast is also a good change of pace. The cast is a band of people who come from many different ethnic backgrounds which is something that I think people will enjoy. The settings are also expanded. A big change in scenery came with the white sand beaches and tropical island type planet that the final moments of the film take place on was something new to the Star Wars series. It’s a different change of pace then the desert, tundra, or forest looking scenery that you usually see in series. I feel like that was a big selling point for the advertisement. In the trailer you see members of the rebellion running across this tropical beach which is something we haven’t seen before. The movie is also filled with a few cameos that true Star Wars fans will be thrilled about when they spot them. Not to mention James Earl Jones returns with the iconic voice of Darth Vader. When I went to go see the film I received a text from a friend that read “It’s not a Star Wars movie without a lightsaber battle”. That statement proved to be incorrect and ultimately false. The film was enjoyable because it was different from all the other films. If you’re a fan of the series, I highly recommend that you see it in theatres to get the full experience. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is an excellent film that will be admired by fans of the series new and old.
