Road Tripping Across America

Why a cross-country road-trip is worth the time and driving.

When many Americans discuss going on vacation, we talk about how we want to get outside of the United States and see the rest of the world. We forget about all of the wonders within our own amazing country. I know that I am one of those people who have the desire to see other countries and discover other cultures, many times overlooking what can be discovered without using my passport.

The United States has so many hidden gems and places that you would never think of visiting or traveling to, because they're not near major cities or popular tourist destinations. We are all missing out on seeing our country in its fullest. Therefore, I suggest that we all pack up our suitcases, stock our car full of snacks and fill up that tank of gas so we can get on the road. Sometimes we need just a little bit of convincing to go on adventures like these, which is where I step in. Two summers ago, my dad and I drove my car cross country from New York to Los Angeles over the course of a week. This trip is why I'm about to get all preachy as to why you all need to jump in your cars....NOW!

1. Food, food, food, and more food.

A cross-country road-trip would not be complete without the variety of food you get to try and discover. Not a day went by where my dad and I didn't have an amazing meal that we wouldn't stop talking about and posting pictures of. The best places are usually in the middle of nowhere and have lots of butter. So, bring your stretchy pants and prepare to be in a constant food coma.

2. The people.

You will meet so many different and amazing people on your trip across the country. During your adventures, you will most likely be greeted by kind people who want to learn just as much about you as you want to about them.

3. Abandoned towns.

This may seem like an odd reason to go on a cross-country trip, but seeing abandon towns on interstate highways is something out of a movie. These towns are time capsules to the past that have been untouched for years. They can be a tad scary, so if you get freaked out easily, save these stops for the daytime.

4. The National Parks.

Honestly, just make sure to go to the Grand Canyon if anything. There is nothing quite like seeing the sights you've only seen on the internet or in National Geographic shows. A picture can say a thousand words, but nothing can make up for seeing it in real life.

5. Shopping.

In certain areas of the country, you'll find your normal chain stores and malls. But the best finds are always in the small family run stores. You'll find your favorite new jewelry or shirt in some random place, and people will be asking where you got it. Jokes on them, because it's a one of a kind.

6. The adventure itself.

The stories you will have from your trip across the country is the best reason to embark on the journey. Sharing stories of where you go and the people you meet will last you for the rest of your lifetime. Whether you only drive across part of the country, or from coast to coast, you won't regret it. Make sure to grab some great company, make a few driving playlists and have a reserve bag of snacks and drinks. Now grab your keys and fill up the car with gas. You're all set. See you at the destination.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
