I don't think it's uncommon for most people to struggle getting up in the morning. I've struggled to do it my entire life, and the college lifestyle of 8 a.m. classes and all-nighters hasn’t made it any easier. Even though I loved sleeping until noon and taking multiple naps a day, I was envious of those who could get up early (especially on the weekend) and make the most of the day.
Having had a steady 9-5 job this past summer, I had some time to get used to being an early riser. And I must say, I really love it. Getting up early has allowed me to take better advantage of the daylight hours (which are growing shorter with fall approaching!) and has made me feel more productive overall. Studies also show that people who get up early in the morning are slimmer, happier and healthier than those who lie in, which is a big bonus. I’ll share some of my tricks that might help you turn into a morning person.
Move your phone off of your nightstand
If you have to get out of bed to turn off your alarm, which for most is now their cell phone, you’ll be way less likely to sneak back under the covers. Try putting your phone (or your alarm clock if you still use one like me) as far away from your bed as possible. Once you’re up, you’ll be less likely to hit snooze.
Drink up
After a full night’s sleep, you’ve gone several hours without hydrating, which can lead to fatigue. I always start my morning with a tall glass of lemon water and a cup of herbal tea (I have many different kinds for lots of different days). Having a morning beverage as your go-to can make for a much more pleasant morning ritual.
Start a morning ritual
The best way to transform yourself into a morning person is to make mornings something you look forward to. I used to wake up 10 minutes before class, which left me barely enough time to brush my teeth. Now, I have time to wake up, wash my face, do a few sun salutations, make my tea and eat a hearty breakfast. The morning light (and quiet) allows me some time to meditate and it definitely impacts my day in a positive way.
Be productive
Having some time to relax in the morning is great, but it can feel just as amazing to start your day off on a productive note. I will usually check my e-mail (a little bit after I wake up – I try to avoid checking my phone right after I open my eyes!) and read some news before heading to class. Feeling accomplished sets a great tone for the rest of the day.
Make it a habit
Once you get used to waking up early, try not to break the habit! I am definitely one to stay in bed until 11 a.m. on Saturday if I absolutely need to, but you want to try to maintain a normal sleep schedule. Get up when your body wakes you up naturally – it is one of the perks of getting on a normal sleep schedule! Find what best works for you. It usually comes easiest to those who make it to bed a little earlier too!
