Neon Icon and rapper Riff Raff, also known by the name, Jody Highroller, throughout the sphere that is social media, has recently released a song called, “FLORiDA STATE,” and the song is actually not that bad. Since its release, “FLORiDA STATE” has been my go-to song for just about anything at FSU, whether it’s pregaming for the Strip, working out at the Leach, or studying at Strozier. It only took me one listen before I was convinced that this should be the new Seminole fight song.
The song “FLORiDA STATE” was released in honor of the Riff Raff concert hosted by Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at FSU. The concert, held in October, was so great that sorority girls were ditching their date functions to go to it.
The music video of the song has everything one can expect and hope for. The red velvet robe Riff Raff wears contrasts his emerald green grillz nicely, his hair is freshly braided like a young girl on a Carnival Cruise, and the slow motion visuals of his gold accessories make me jealous that I don’t own a Versace pinky ring. For example, Riff Raff wears a diamond-studded gold chain of a cartoon version on himself that is also wearing a mini gold chain for crying out loud.
My favorite nod to Florida State was the "garnet-colored codeine" he sips throughout the video. Fun fact: Riff Raff nicknamed his $1.3 million dollar Las Vegas mansion the “Codeine Castle”. Unfortunately,MTV Cribsis no longer making new episodes, but the Codeine Castle seems like the perfect home to be featured, considering there is a purple pool with a waterslide and swim-up bar, a purple workout room, and a basketball court. Mere mortals such as myself can only imagine the modern Gatsby-esque parties Riff Raff must throw in his castle. He raps about cranberry rings and raspberry belts, but deep down Riff Raff knows nothing looks better than garnet and gold.
The song “FLORiDA STATE” is part of Riff Raff’s new EP, Trench Coat Towers, which he claims is, “the Versace crab dip appetizer,” before the, “lemonberry lobster main entrée,” otherwise known as the Peach Panther studio album set to release in the sometime near future. This colorful analogy is just one of the many gems that can be found on Riff Raff’s Twitter account that I shamelessly follow. Based on his tweets, I can only imagine how amazing his book of poetry, Neon Vibes, will be. I may or may not have pre-ordered the book already. I knew I finally made it in this world when the legend himself followed me back on Twitter.
Check out Riff Raff’s video to “FLORiDA STATE” for yourself and memorize the lyrics by heart, just in case the Florida State Marching Chiefs will be required to play the song for next year’s football season. I know I will.
