11 Best Restaurants in Rice Village For College Students

The struggle — not wanting to go to Jason's Deli on the weekends, but also wanting something cheap and nearby. Even though Houston has a ton of good restaurants that you should absolutely explore, if you're looking to stay in Rice Village, I've got you covered. Here are some of my favorites that may not be the usual student picks.

1. Hungry’s

A personal favorite of mine. If you want classics like flatbreads and sandwiches but also gyros and brunch food, this is your place.

2. Mi Luna

This is a great tapas restaurant in the village. Try the gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp). If you don’t know, tapas are little dishes that you order to try/share with whoever you’re with. You can order as much or as little as you want!

3. Local Foods

A great sandwich place in the village. Try the crunchy chicken sandwich.

4. Prego

A little on the expensive side, but good Italian food nonetheless. Their lasagna is SO GOOD.

5. Punk’s Simple Southern Food

If you’re looking for upscale homestyle food, Punk’s is perfect. They have great fried chicken!

6. Something to look forward to: Hopdoddy’s Burger Bar

Coming soon to the village—an Austin favorite for burgers and milkshakes. The other Houston location is doing great, so this one is sure to be busy when it opens.

7. For dessert: The Chocolate Bar

The Chocolate Bar has every dessert under the sun—ice cream, cakes, pies, chocolates, etc. The whimsical setup is fun and charming.

8. Azuma Sushi and Robata Bar

If you like sushi and are willing to spend a few more $, this restaurant right on the outskirts of the village is perfect. Try their soba noodles, too!

9. Thai Spice

A favorite of many Rice students, Thai Spice has good carryout options for Thai food.

10. Sweet Paris

Yes, you’ve probably heard of it, but the crepes are something to brag about! A nice weekend spot to visit, especially if you have a friend or relative in town.

11. Black Walnut

My all-time favorite. Get the chicken tenders, or the chicken tender salad. Really any of the sandwiches... especially the ones with croissants. Enjoy!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
