Dear Alexis Bloomer...

A Response To Alexis Bloomer's "Dear Elders: I'm Sorry" Video

First of all, I don't think millennials suck and not just because I am one. We have so much going for us. A lot of us have good heads on our shoulders and aren't afraid to stick up for ourselves or stick up for others. But are these people only people that I know? Maybe we are too focused on appearances and how many people like our social media posts, but does it really have to be scrutinized all the time? Does it have to be the worst thing in the world? Do we really have to be told that our generation sucks?

No.

Alexis Bloomer recently posted a video on YouTube as an apology to our elders. She wanted to investigate why older people are unhappy with younger generations and reported her findings in her car. She said, "We're just existing. We're not really contributing anything to society." Watch it here: Dear Elders, I'm sorry.

Wait, we aren't contributing anything to society?!

For starters, I am a millennial and I have basic manners. I hold the door open for everyone, no matter their age or gender. I say "thank you" every time someone does something for me or every time I'm given something by someone. I say "hello" when I walk by people I don't necessarily know and I smile at others in hopes they'll do the same. Does it make me a bad person if I don't say "No, Ma'am" or "Yes, Ma'am?" Why are those terms the only ones that can show others that I have manners and that I'm a nice human being?

Second of all, the types of music one listens to most certainly does not define the type of person they are and who they are. And it seems to me that "bae" is used more as a joke than anything to describe those that we love.

And who says who we can and cannot idolize? Kim Kardashian has made some mistakes, but that doesn't make her a horrible person. We all make mistakes.

Regarding free education, I don't have a free one. I wouldn't mind a free education, but I know I'm most certainly not going to get it. I put in the work for my education. In fact, I work extremely hard. Most people I know go to college and are successful there. They do their work, get good grades, and get awesome jobs. Since when are we all so lazy?

We also don't seem to respect our country...I, for one, do respect my country and I've never experienced anyone first-hand that doesn't.

So, Alexis Bloomer, you failed to explain that not all millennials are like this and instead, you morphed everyone together. I would be offended if anyone thought any of these things about me. None of us are perfect and it's so hard to be. It's hard to live up to other's expectations.

Miss Alexis Bloomer, I see your points. Some people are disrespectful and some people are entitled. But please, separate those people from people like me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
