Thoughtcrime (n.) – “an instance of unorthodox or controversial thinking, considered as a criminal offense or as socially unacceptable.”
George Orwell coined the term in his classic dystopian novel, 1984, to describe a situation in which a totalitarian state subjugated their populations to such an extent that they could imprison, torture—even kill—people for believing in things that did not agree with the party line.
On June 15, Canada’s transgender “hate speech” amendment to the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code, Bill C-16, passed its third reading. It now only needs Royal Assent from the House of Commons to become Canadian law—a virtual certainty at this point.
This law effectively makes it a crime to use the incorrect pronouns when speaking to a transgender person on grounds of “hate speech” and “prejudice”. It is very dangerous indeed to members of a free society when the government regulates what speech their populations can and cannot use under the threat of jail time and fines.
While the magnitude of this law is not on an Orwellian scale, it is a significant step backwards in keeping freedom of speech in tact in the Western world. Free speech exists so people can express their views without fear of punishment from their legislatures; Bill C-16 amounts to nothing more than a betrayal to the people that democratically elected their government officials to protect their rights—not erode them away.
I’ve written about this law in March and about its most famous critic, Dr. Jordan Peterson. You can read that article here for more information on why Bill C-16 is a flawed piece of legislation doomed to failure.
In the United States, the text of the First Amendment clearly states that “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech…” We are lucky that we do not have to endure a law like this here—as it would clearly violate the First Amendment—but a piece of parchment will not stop the hordes' death march towards your ultimate capitulation and subjugation. This is why a pushback is needed to defeat these fascists who, under the guise of “tolerance,” “empathy,” and “equality,” set about towards ends opposite of these ideals. They are the intolerant ones. They are the ones who will bludgeon you over the head with the very empathy you show them—all the while claiming to be victims of your ruthless oppression.
I encourage you to read the full text of Bill C-16 for yourself and to draw your own conclusions.
