Last week, yet another Republican Party Debate was held, but this one was different. This time around, Donald Trump was no longer in first place. It was also a complete and utter shit show, but that's per usual.
For some unknown reason, the moderators asked a variety of inane and overall irrelevant questions including the candidate's opinions of Draft Kings and Fan Duel. There were ridiculous talks of impossible tax cuts, and Carly Fiorina said Hillary Clinton's policies are bad for women. So, overall, it was pretty rough without adding in Donald Trump. Trump was vicious because of his falling poll numbers, and he basically was like a rabid dog all night. But he didn't seem to have a problem with Mike Huckabee, who was sporting a Trump tie on stage for some odd reason.
In other news, an all female flight test crew in Russia are currently going through experiments to see how a completely female crew would deal with the physical and psychological strain of space travel. Right before they began their experiments, they held a press conference. I'm sure the media was all over their personal stories and backgrounds, who inspired them, and what they're looking forward to. Because what else could you really want to know from an all female flight crew?
But don't worry, the media got to the heart of possible issues. They asked how they planned to survive without makeup and men.
As if being an accomplished female scientist wasn't enough, now you can't do anything without people asking you how you will function without a man and or literal fake stuff you put on your face. I don't even know what to say about this one other than way to go, media. Really hitting it out of the park with your amazingly sexist questions. You always manage to outdo yourself, really.
The last thing I want to address this week is the fact that a South Carolina teenager was assaulted on video by a school resource officer. I'm sure everyone and their mother has heard about it, but every new detail that comes out tears me up inside. The teenager, 16, was living in foster care. The officer had a history of misconduct. The Sheriff initially said the teen wasn't injured, but she in fact sustained injuries to her arm, neck, and face. She was new at the school and very quiet, according to classmates.
Let me say this: if you see a teenager being abused by a man two feet taller than her and 100 pounds heavier and your first reaction is "well, I'm sure she did something wrong and probably deserved it," I sincerely worry about your mental health. There is not an excuse for excessive force, especially against an underage girl. Not a single one.
The coverage of this fiasco, however, is what makes me sick. CNN coverage of the event was pretty horrendous, but the icing on the cake was when Don Lemon opened his dumb mouth.
Hostin is a prosecutor. If anyone knows anything about law, I'd be willing to bet it would be her.
The world was filled with good news this week, but we also manage to cover all of the heartbreak and conflict (because we're a ratings-based media system that thrives off advertising advantages) but I digress. Here's your weekly dose of good news:
China has lifted the one-child per family ban. Families are now allowed to have two children.
Abby Faber, the young Iowa State fan who visited TCU and made a splash, was flown back to Amon G. Carter Stadium and walked out onto the field to a standing ovation. TCU has begun an online fundraiser for Faber's medical expenses, and they have raised more than $30,000 so far.
One of the driest places on Earth is currently covered in pink flowers after extreme rainfall. I mean, technically, we could look at this as a sign of extreme climate change, but it's too pretty to worry about that kind of thing.
