Seldom does it occur that you are gifted a constant in life. Even less often will you find that this constant is so common that if not paid special attention to it will almost certainly be taken for granted. So it is with the utmost regard that I honor this constant. Today I will pay tribute to the presence that has remained steady throughout my tumultuous teenage years and which I can only assume will continue to do so through the duration of my life. Today I say thank you to coffee; for its unwavering loyalty and persistence that has accompanied me for years. Because I know coffee has always been more than just a beverage to me.
I want to write about how through late nights and early mornings cramming for exams that required I score well, coffee has been my comfort and motivation to allow me to realize that I am more capable than I know. For if I can only foster the same persistence that it does, I can and I will achieve all that I set my heart to.
And when I receive back the scores I knew I could get l will thank the cup(s) of coffee that kept me company and tapped into the potential that was welling inside of me for there was no feat too daunting for me, nor will there ever be.
A trip to the local coffeehouse was the scene of the date where I grew from someone so closed off into a person who could feel deeply and wholly; at first, only in the presence of the boy who took me there, but then eventually to everyone I met. For that experience made the bitter taste of the drink so sweet. It’s uncanny how the incandescence of coffee shop lighting can shine just enough to illuminate the parts of a being that you can’t help but fall irreversibly in love with. When your beverage of choice just mirrors your soul and at just the right times it makes you feel whole
And for the day that I am tasked with remembering eight different drinks for eight different people who may not even know my name, I will be grateful for the opportunity to perform such a mundane task. For every step I take is one in the direction of my dream. For a chore that may seem so petty will teach me not only perseverance, but humility, and grace, virtues I hope to carry with me a lot longer than my superior’s drinks.
I want to write these sentiments down so when I walk down the street and smell the boldness of a drink that only awards me feelings of comfort I can be reminded all it has stood with me through. For when the nostalgia it provides transforms from a word or feeling to a taste and experience. So that every cup becomes a means of travel to take me through space and time to remember that shop, with that cup, and that person; to the beginning of it all.
