When I was in high school, a social studies teacher told my class that when it comes to elections we should try to vote for whoever the best candidate is regardless of party. I may not have always followed that advice as I tend to lean left and prefer my candidates to do the same, but I did like the idea of voting for someone who you genuinely think is going to be the best person for the job, especially if they are extremely qualified. In this election that choice should be pretty damn clear by now, but unfortunately for a lot of people it still isn’t.
As of this writing, there are only 46 days left until Election Day and according to most polls Hillary Clinton is barely leading Donald Trump. The website FiveThirtyEight has Secretary Clinton’s chances at 60.5% and Donald Trump at 39.5%. For anyone who doesn’t want Donald Trump to be president that should be just a little bit concerning. It would be a massive understatement to say that this election is incredibly divisive for many reasons, but there can be no doubt as to who is the most qualified to be president. So with that in mind, allow me to make a plea for everyone reading this to vote for Hillary Clinton on November 8th.
Now I get it. I really, really do. She is a flawed candidate and maybe even a flawed person. But let’s be real here for just a few moments. She is a politician. There is no single politician who isn’t flawed, and yes that includes everyone’s “perfect” summer boyfriend Bernie Sanders, who by the way has even said that he is going to vote for Clinton.
For better or worse we live in a two-party system. We only have two choices. Yes, you can vote for Gary Johnson or Jill Stein if you want, but let’s be honest, what is that going to do? You’re not sticking it to the Democrats or the Republicans. You’re sticking it to the country, because they have no chance of winning. Period. I’m not happy with either of our choices, but this is where we are. Our choices are between a career politician who at best would make a decent president, and at worst make a mediocre one and we vote her out of office in four years, and a man who has never held elected office, has been proven to be a habitual liar, and who is appealing to the worst parts of our country by spewing ignorant, racist, and sexist lies with every single word that comes out of his mouth. I wouldn’t even trust this man to be president of a neighborhood association board. This man has no business even being in Washington D.C. In fact, being anywhere near the Potomac River is still too close to The White House for my comfort.
I have my own issues with Hillary Clinton. Yes, she voted for the Iraq War. Yes, she sent emails from her private server, which apparently is a big deal because she was talking about how we never really landed on the moon or whatever paranoid fantasy you believe in. Yes, the Benghazi Consulate was attacked while she was Secretary of State, which apparently is the worst thing to happen to this country since 9/11 even though under President Bush there were 13 attacks on U.S. embassies, but it was Bush and he kept us safe so let’s not talk about that. But none of these things disqualify her from being president. Like I said, no one is perfect. She is a flawed candidate who is extremely better than the alternative.
If the choice is between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, then I am voting for the best candidate. And that is Hillary Clinton. She isn’t perfect, and she never will be, but I’m with her. If you really don’t want Trump to be president and think he would be a disaster, then you should be with her too.
